Okay I have a cali model 89 gs500... There is a third line in the gas tank that goes to the charcoal canister, then a line from the charcoal canister to the carbs.
Well; the line from the canister to the carbs wasn't hooked into the carbs.. it was just sitting there; and the place where it connects into the carbs is sealed with a rubber thing. so... I removed the charcoal canister (it was in the way of my rear shock install) but do I just buy a rubber cap and cap it off at the gas tank? (that third nipple on the gas tank...)
Also... there is a rubber hose going from the top of the carbs; over the airbox and it connects to....... nothing. Should it connect to something?
finally... there is a place at the bottom outside of the airbox for a hose; but nothing is connected to it. According to clymers this is a "breather hose" (I think that's what it said.) Should there be a hose there? Where should it connect?
okay... There are 4 places on the gas tank for connections. Two go to the petcock. The one closest to the petcock is the overflow drain? I assume this one just runs behind the airbox to the same place as the tube that comes from the middle of the top of the carbs.
Now... there is a fourth connnection on the tank. This went to the charcoal canister. I assume I can just seal it..
The over flow and the rollover (the one away from the petcock fitting) should both be sent to air behind air box. The carbs top hose from the part just under the top cover and the carbs bottom hose from the front of the carb bodies all go to the air as well. Route them over and behind the air box and under and behind the air boxis possible. The charcoal can will be there but un connected.
Cool.

hmm... okay let me repeat it to make sure I have it right.
4 connections on gas tank. Two obviously go to petcock; other two are routed above and over the airbox to atmosphere. The top hose on the carb is also routed to atmosphere. The bottom hose on carb goes to atmos...
my bottom hose on the carbs is capped off... should I uncap it? I have DJ carbs ready to go on my bike.. just need a new filter, and to get the flange you made welded onto my pipe.
If capped...well let it be.
Also with the DJ carbs you are going to need K&N pod filters... or well the hack method is to install the stock main jets in the DJ carbs ... stage 1 they give you 122's ... since you have needles of the DJ in that carb put your 122.5 and it should be about right on a stage 1. In all honesty I prefer stock carbs and needles and jets and fiddle with that... 40 pilots and 125 mains and 1 #4 under needle and 3 turns on mix screw, and float leve to top of float bowl. ... makes for a more predictable bike which I can trouble shoot wihtout looking at it... I'd strongly suggest you do your carbs... in a few months or whenever you know you wanna open a whole new can of worms fit the other ones and run for a stage 3...someone on this site willprobably sell a K&N RU 2970 or clamp on K&N soon... BTW FZR 1000 K&N's fit the GS well...
Cool.

funny you say that.. I just ordered the lunchbox filter like 10 min ago... Paid $32 shipped for it so didn't seem like a bad deal..... basically when that gets here I'm going to have the flange welded on and try those carbs out... I mean it can't break anything.......... can it? (came off a running but wrecked badly bike..) :dunno:
Oh well your trash pile is going to rival mine soon...
Lunch box is fine... why weld on my flange ... if you want to... slipped on is fine ... I personally dont like to switch to K&N's before the bike gets 20-25K... it does hurt longevity, though we live in far from a dusty environment... I'd like to slowly wear it out to near irrepairable state before completely trashing it... So basically "any time you open the throttle you sand blast the top of your pistons..." My friend's quote which I love repeating...
Cool.

grr.... They have those prefilter things you attach to the outside for "dusty conditions.." I might buy one of those...
I dunno.. I haven't actually "slipped it on" yet but it seems like it would come off; or not seal all the way... I guess I don't really truly understand what makes the seal. basically I cut off just outside the weld; then grind down the weldmarks... then slip it on..
Cut the outer flared part...so the cannister will come off leaving 2 inches of head pipe still under it ... then grind the weld off a bit. Then OK you should have make the marks etc on the flange... with those marks you will need to cut the inside head pipe into a C with the open end of the C facing the swingarm. Then slipon flange and bolt muffler on. Wont come out once its all clamped... there is 2 inches inside the muffler, wont leak... cos its tightly on there... like a hammer fit. Of course with a weld on you have freedom of where you want to fit it. I can send you a better flange if you want to weld though ... one wihtout the lip... flat flange... so weld it on wherever you like and bolt the muffler on much more freedom, and lot less measuring and cutting...
Cool.

About the Hoses* The spout at the bottom front of the airbox normally has a "capped hose" attached, with a slit in the cap. (See
this BikeBandit diagram (http://houseofmotorcycles.bikebandit.com/partsbandit/showschematic~dept_id~724722.asp).)
* The drain hose from the center of the tank's underside usually routes between the carbs and the airbox.
* Both of the previous hoses, along with the battery vent hose, usually emerge as a bundle behind the right footpeg. (See this photo (http://www.bbburma.net/MiscFotos/100_1493_AirboxDrainHose.jpg) for the general area.)
* Non-CA models don't even HAVE the 4th hose connection under the tank. I'd say "Cap it."
* Again, non-CA model don't even HAVE hoses connecting them together. I'd say "Leave 'em capped".[/list:u]Did I forget anything?
