Ok for those of you that have been watching I have finished my LED talilight.
http://www.gstwin.com/albums/member_bikes/adg.jpg
Check it out. Email me for info. :thumb:
 Nice job! Nowmass poduce them and sell them to us! :thumb:
Mmmmmmm...doughnuts.
Very sharp indeed, but I see other possibilities. Now here's a bone for you.
Multi-button interface that you can easily get to with left thumb. As many buttons as messages, or two scroll buttons with a select button. Have a LED panel (much like what you have) that spells out messages to the folks that you pass.
I was riding through Princeton today and desperately wanted to display a message to a Squid on a very sharp black/grey/yellow 750 GSXR.
"Boots save toes" "Is that your racing number on your leathers" "Cops love wheelies on public roads", and so forth.
To be serious, I think you did a great job.
That looks friggin AWESOME! Can't wait to get mine on. Once that happens they ARE going to be mass produced...any takers?
That looks real sweet..!! :thumb:
They look fantastic! :? :thumb:
You've done a great job with those JeffD. ;)
I think Pablo's lust levels are at bursting point!!
seanjrobinson@aol.com
So far it is just a direct replacement for the bulbs. Remove old bulbs, wire it up (3 wires) and then mount it in place with 2 screws and replace the lens. :) I am going to start a signup list. I need at least 25 people to sign up before I can start to mass produce these things. (just sign up not pay yet) and unless I can find cheaper parts/boards then I am looking at $40 to your front door, (shipping Included). And build time would have to be a month (because of getting the boards fabricated) :thumb:
P.M. me or Email me to sign up.
Count me in! That looks sweet! Nice job!!! Well done! :thumb:
Snapper
That Looks SWEET!!!!!!!!! count me in, when you mass produce them!!!!
Will that fit the >2001 models too?
If Pablo gets one I have to get one
Seriously, I do want one for the newer model as well.
It does look great and it sounds simple to install which I like a lot :thumb: .
Yes I am sending one to Pablo for fitting on the newer models. (shoulden't be a problem though)
Well so far I count 5 people. :thumb:
Looks Great, Jeff.
Question - Have you calculated wattage vs tungsten bulbs?
And are the LED's you used white or red? (the reason I'm asking is because they look quuite bright, and you are still using a red taillight lens, it looks like.
I'm in if you can ship to Canada, anyway , we'll work something out.
Jim Rillie
Halifax, Nova Scotia
I have 5 parallel circuits max running at ~ 20mA
and I am using 14v for my calculations (because thats the average charging voltage )
so total draw is 100mA at 14 volts is a whopping 1.4 watts. :thumb:
and I believe the standard bulbs run at like 20watts each.
Oh and Yes they are red, (and I have two clear for the license plate)
and I figured shipping to be $3 in the US so I'm sure I could get one out to ya for less than $45 (If i can get enough people to sign up)
Put me down for a 2001 model please. This looks very cool. Hell, the the LED's that fit in the 1157 sockets are almost $30 each around here. Something like this is much better than those.
Add another one to the list. Those are off the chizzle for shizzle my nizzle. You engineers come up with the damnest thing.
Myles
I'm in!

Got a question
Ok... i see 2 circles.... do they dim down when you are not using the brakes?
You said there's 3 wires... one is 14V One is Ground... How much is the 3rd wire?
Thanks
I assume one is ground, one hot for running lights, one hot for brake lights? Should be same as stock, though I haven't looked to be sure.
Glenn is right. I have a resistor bank that gets shorted out to lower the resistance and Increase the current which makes them brighter. so they are
+14 All the time
+14 When brake is depressed
0 common.
Go ahead and put my name on there too. I don't need em but they're 8)
Im putting my name down for one, but I wont be able to fire some dough your way until the next pay cycle or so..
Alright Well rather than start another topic and get John mad at me Ill just add it into here.
UPDATE: 5-14-03
I am going to wait till monday if anyone else wants to sign up then close the list and order/build the lights and ship (less than a month if nothing goes wrong)

I plan on making and shipping in that order (because that is approximately the order that people signed up). If you see any doubles or want on the list just let me know, PM or email.
Oh and Incase you didn't read the whole Post I am looking at $40 total to you door (including Shipping Domestic US)
electrovw@hotmail.com or
jdahle@mail.usf.edu
:thumb:
Sorry to ask so late (just joined the boards hello!) but any idea on what shipping might be to the UK? Love the look of those brake lights, fantastic.
I think there is a similar product available over here but not sure it looks quite so cool...
Well I just checked UPS.com and it said $85. No way. The package is under 1lb, dimensions are 8.5cmX8.0cmX14.5cm. Oh yeah whats the Zip/area/whatever code for mail. (I just arbitraily put 2555 so that may have thrown it off.)
Post code for work address is
LE10 0NA
(Thats LE TEN ZERO NA)
Sorry. I just checked with UPS, Fedex and the cheapest was $45 shipping.
STOP
Alright well rather than get too far in over my head I am going to stop taking names for now. I want to get these built and sent out. If you still want one I am sure I can order more parts and build some more later on but I would like to get this first batch done. :thumb: OK so Those of you on the list I will contact you when I am going to ship and get addresses and such. I would like money orders because I can ship the next day instead of waiting for a check to clear, but I can take checks as well although I will wait for it to clear b4 I send out the light.
and Yes John I will send you one too. (check that is :thumb: )
Many THanks for checking for me Jeff :) Ill pass this time round.
wheuuuuuuu, just made it by the skin of my teeth :) !
Htanks Jeff :thumb:
hey jeff, mrausby is my alter ego :)
If you guys want one bad I'll auction mine off to the highest bidder ;)
If i remember correctly you were going to check into Paypal also
is that still going to be an option or do you jsut prefer money order???
I got deterred from paypal by Paypalsucks.com but Money orders cost $0.50 apiece, It only takes ~3days for standard mail and then it only took 5 days for me to ship it all the way from FL to CA so It will be ok. :thumb:
you know what i shoudlt have given you that site..
paypal is okay, as long as your getting it from a trusted person, who is verified ..
because the times with paypal you get jipped is when they do a recall on what they sent you. Most of paypal's issues is with ebay, when people sell, crooks try to say didnt receive it and retake payment.
But you still got to be careful.... I am very careful with paypal.. I have a strong password and I make sure i go straight to paypal.com to log in and not thru some link in an email.
***UPDATE*** I just ordered the parts and I have decided to add another White LED for the taillight which cost $1 for me so I am just going to add $1 so $41 apiece. I hope this doesn't make anyone not want one. I added the LED so there will now be 3 white LEDs aiming at the license plate to help light it up better so the Po-Po dont bother anyone. and Pablo we can work something out about getting you one with the 3 clear. (a little later though, please :thumb: )
I'm cool as is. Don't worry about me. I just brough it to your attention for future units (re:the semi dark spot in center that would possibly necessitate a 3rd lamp).
Well do you think only having two would be a problem? Because It takes nothing to add/remove the 1 LED. I know what Ill do. OPTIONAL 3rd LED for $1. :thumb:
I'd include the 3rd light for the sake of liability, and it costs so little...mine is fine though for me...
i see no problems with an extra buck . im still in , let me know when ur ready to ship
I can handle a dollar! ;)
Thanks man!
Sounds good to me, I mean, the only other thing I can get with a buck is 10-10-2-20
I'm still definatly in :thumb:
Jason L.
I'm still in!! :thumb:
One more d@mn dollar, I don't know about that.... wait a second.... I think I see some.... yes it's a dollar in change in the sofa. Okay, I guess I'm still in.

I am verified. its just that i dont have an extra card to list so i can have a confirmed address  i havent had problems with ebay as of yet but im sure somebody will see something seriously wrong....
I am still in even with the extra dollar, hmmm.... could've used it in Vegas though.
me too me too!!! Just say when you need the money!!
by the way, JeffD, I hooked up with some bandit riders over the weekend and one of them had that r6 home made LED setup I had sent you (that started this whole thing with the round LED setup). Turns out his was significantly darker than mine! IN the fog we rode in some had trouble seeing him but not me! hehehe...
Good job on these. I love mine...
Thats great!! Oh hey I was looking through the old posts and Amazingly enough I cant find anything on the guy who built them b4. All his links are dead. Or Im just not looking hard enough?!? heh. I aint going no where anytime soon so. :thumb:
Also I should have the LED's today and I am going to start building them tonight/tomorrow and I have already started to contact people for shipping info. I am going down the list in 5 people increments while I am building them but I dont think it will take tooooo long to get most of them built so if I haven't contacted you, I will in a couple days.
jeff put me on the end of the list.. :)
that way i got some time .. thanks.. im beginning to mod my bike.. weee!
Oh I am talking to some guy here in LA to see if he can make a clear plastic tail lamp for the 2001's.
i thought jeff wasn't taking anymore names? well, if there is a back-up list, that may not even exist yet, i'd like to get my name down on this non-existent list, in whichever position this may be, so that on some day in a possible future i could own one of those badass brake lights. jeff, did i mention you're obviously the coolest guy on the board? 8) or, that if i don't have a nice bright brake light, you know, perhaps one that looks as good as the ones you're making, i could be involved in an accident because people don't see me stopping? :o not that it would be your fault for not hooking me up with a light; just thinking out loud i guess. :) (guilt trip and flattery set, just gotta wait for the light in the mail. SCORE!!!!) :thumb:
Wow Zarathustra you should go into buisness. You could brown nose your way to the top man!!!! oh BTW somehow you managed to get on the list so. :thumb: The reason I stopped was because I didn't want to get 30-40 people signed up and then not be able to build them due to not having the LED's (thats bad for buisness) But I'll keep taking names (the company I buy from now has an inventory of around 90,000 leds) . Right now I have enough "Parts" to build 16 of them then I am going to figure out how many people are left, been added etc. Then order for that many and stop all together. This is because it cost around $20 to get the stuff shipped each time. (one is shipping for the LED's, the other half is for the PCB material) so I cant keep ordering stuff over and over again. And I cant Stockpile stuff due to being a College student and all. (a double major in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering :thumb: )

Okay, your either trying to be funny or you do not know that the favorites(Microsoft Internet Explorer) is the same as bookmarks.
You are a smart guy but I know you do not have a photographic memory.
Pornagraphic, maybe ;)
I know I'm chiming in pretty far down in the LED light pecking order, but I'll take a set too. :) Should I expect them sometime in December? Hee hee... Seriosly though, when you finally make it down to me let me know- I'll send the money.

Trying to be funny...BUT I do remember where many of the URL's are (or use google for help) and I just open another window, look for the page myself and copy the URL into the gstwin post...almost photographic but not really. Pornographic for sure...maybe that's where that particular "ability" came from? :nono:

Just drop me a line when you get to me (If you get to me)

I'm guessing the board is less than 10sqin. If you use PCBexpress, you could get 20 boards for $220 ($11/board) and get your boards in 30 hours. Or you could put 3-4 copies of the circuit on one board and pay $200 for 10 boards ($5-7/board) and cut them yourself.
http://www.pcbexpress.com/products/express1.php
These things are going to be cool. Don't forget me JeffD. I really want one bad. Bright light Bright light
Quote from: jangofettBright light Bright light
light up the night with colored lights; or maybe turn on the magic of colored lights? ahh childhood toys. (i suppose that was light bright though...)
I had thought about using PCB express but I would have to make so many boards to make it worth my time. Already I am not making a ton of money making these things so by increasing cost I'd be shooting myself in the foot. Now If I got 50-100 people so sign up and Pay first then I would use PCBexpress but not with 20 one-offs.
How long to these LED's last?
-Anti
Theoretical operating time is 100,000hrs or if you want to compare it to a motorcycle.
avg speed of 45mph ~ 4,500,000miles. :thumb:

I got mine :) Hehehe, I know what I am doing this weekend
Thanks Jeff :thumb:
Looks great Jeff :thumb:
It looks like a Pink Floyd concert on my bikes tail
So you got it all hooked up and running fine?!? I wana see. 8)
I can't wait to see one. Hope I am still on the list. I saw a bike the other night with one. It is so bright. Good safety feature :thumb:
How far are you through the list Jeff? I'm wondering when I can expect mine!! No rush, just curious!
if you guys want to see it I have pictures of it on my page... :thumb:
Hey Pablo, can you take a picture of those "quick splice" connectors you used to connect the wiring? I'm not sure what those are or where to get them.
should be at radio shack, also try "inline wire splice" basically its a Plastic box with two channels in it (for wire) and then a cap that has a piece of metal protruding.
Just tie a good knot and throw a 1/2 a cent worth of electric tape on there. If you get the wiring wrong you can take it apart. I have rewired entire wiring harnesses that way.
Quote from: JeffDshould be at radio shack, also try "inline wire splice" basically its a Plastic box with two channels in it (for wire) and then a cap that has a piece of metal protruding.
this is exactly what it is. I had pictures of it-could take some more I guess but don't have webspace that I can link to here...anyone?
You KNOW who you can ask, Pablo.
And don't worry too much about size - I've got another 85MB....
You're awesome Kerry, thanks. I'll see if I still have that photo or maybe I'll just pull off the seat tomorrow and shoot another if it's possible (may be tucked too far under the rear body...)
Hey pablo did you hear about the trick with TRIPOD? where you upload the picture as a "FILE" not a picture and rename it whatever.txt and then act like it is a picture and the firewall wont block it. :thumb: For example i have
this is located at htt_p//electrovw.tripod.com/welcome/front.txt.

To those of you whom I have contacted, I am going to start selling to those people who are going to buy them if I do not get a response. I have notified more than half of the people on the list and have only gotten 6 responses. So after (wednesday) I am going to disregard the list (due to the no responses) and sell them. :thumb:

So will these boards fit in an R1 taillight or are they just for the stock GS....?
wow...this thread is back from the graves...
Hey the link is dead !??
I wanna see :)
Can someone possibly post a picture of them? There is one earlier in the thread, but it's a dead link.
Dave
Pablo's site has a 'Installing LED's in stock taillight' page:
http://pantablo500.tripod.com/id47.html
C
I second the "back from the grave".
I designed a second set of LED taillights, but dont have the $$ or time to Manufacture them.
I'll be graduating college in 2 months and getting a real job so I might be able to get some more out in a little bit. I got lucky with parts for the first set but for the second set I'm looking at getting boards fabricated in Thailand (or somewhere) and have to order a hundred or so. This is why I haven't "sold" any yet.
the prototype can be found here.
http://electrovw.tripod.com/id19.html
and disregard the part about sending an email if you want one and Ill get them built. I really dont have time. I've got 4 summer classes including a graduate class so I'm a little busy.
I know you're busy, but whenever you get around to them again, I'm interested :) They look good!
Good luck with school in the meantime!
I came back last week from a trip to NH, and on the way back my tail light went out :( Probably the week of wet and moisture did a job to it :P (no running light, no brake light) Before then, the LED tail lights were great!
I'll see what I can do for troubleshooting if I have some spare time.
Until then, I was smart and did not chop off the stock bulb sockets, so I can plug those in ;)
Was it one I made? If it is I would suggest checking the wiring to the taillight (where you spliced it) because the circuit is so simple I dont see how the whole thing could fail. Since both Running and brake went out I would check the ground wire. It might have also gotten pulled out of where I soldered it to the board. And you could probably drop this thing in a bucket of water and it'll still work. (no I haven't tried) Maybe later :-)
Let me know!
Thanks,
:thumb:

I'll go do that! The stock wiring harness checked out all the way to the stock plug for the tail lights. Considering how I rode about 25 or so miles over dirt roads over my trip, the ground wire could have worked its way loose (ground wire was my suspicion, too). I didn't have time to check the circuit board at my friend's house. What's the running and brake light voltages again?
Your LED lights work great, BTW :)
dont go over 14.5v.
13v would be best.

these are pretty sweet!

I want one if they're still available
come on peeps! someone has to know something abt jeffD help a twinner out
Jeff, are you still selling these led mods?
He's gone.... even before I was a member.
got my hopes up...oh well.
anyone know of any good alternative led tailight options?
Whatever you do, do NOT get those LED bulbs at auto parts stores... they only throw light in one direction, so when the bulb it on, there's very little light output.
There are bulbs out there that throw light in every direction, including backwards towards the reflectors... I never tried those, but in theory should work out ok.
thers 2 options ive found on ebay, one for about $65 and one for about $110, they both have integrated turn signals as well. along with flush mount turn signals in the back, that might be good. if anyone has any experience with these lights, let us know if the brake light is bright enough! the one i know is dot approved but i'd still like to know.

No problemo, although the tail light is fine at night, I'm actually planning on making auxiliary brake lights from some Luxeon K2 LED emitters (I've got a load of them). I set up a circuit that flashed quickly when the brakes were activated and then went high-intensity, but the heat output was a bit too much (they are being driven at 1 amp, so 5 watts). I need to find some heatsinks so that the emitters don't burn-up in 90F+ weather.
