Title: jumpy throttle
Post by: weaselnoze on November 08, 2004, 03:31:46 PM
i dont know if this is normal or what but no matter how hard i try to ease the throttle open, it jumps like i rolled the grip real fast.  also there is freeplay.  is there any adjustments i can make? i've found that when im going around a corner sometimes i need to open the throttle (from completely closed) just a tad and no matter how much i ease into it, it will do this and throws me off balance.

i clutch it into the "friction zone" for these kind of maneuvers.  makes the throttle smooth as butter

You could check the throttle cable from the grip to the carbs to make sure it is properly functioning and tensioned.

Something like that happens to my bike, but only when it's not fully warmed up or I running with some choke. So maybe it has to do with the carbs?

But check the cable, that sounds more likely.

Is the idle screw set so low that the butterflies are bottoming out (causing the throttle jump when they pop free of the bore) and causing too much slack in the throttle cable? A vac leak could cause proper idle even with the butterflies fully closed?

You can adjust throttle slack at either end of the cable.

Check out Item 18 on this BikeBandit diagram.  Slide your eyes up the cable from the "18".  The first thing you run into is the upper adjuster.  I don't have a great picture of it (and it's raining right now or I would try to TAKE one) but you can see it in this photo from my "Throttle Retainer" page.  It's NOT the item that I have the screwdriver stuck into - it's in between the knuckle on my forefinger and the brake lever.

If you need more adjustability you can get it at the lower end of the cable, where it attaches to the carb assembly.  It's a similar setup, with a beefy hex-shaped adjuster and a standard nut to lock it in place.
