Post by: my50trk on November 14, 2004, 02:58:10 PM
Ok so maybe I am an idiot I cant figure out how to get the seat off easily and the battery on my 98 gs500e  is dead.  And yes this is my first bike and I just got it.  If it was a car I would have not problems but it aint.  Thanks.

Push down on the seat while you turn the key
Some times there is too much presure to get the latch to release easily

Yes, that's the way I do it, too, on my '98 GS:

Try to - gently - turn the key (cw), and then, BANG, use the fist beating on the seat somewhere just behind the rider's seat. Off it goes.

After not removing my seat for a couple of months, it no-longer wants to pop off.  I can turn the key easily.  The left side pops loose, but not the right side.  I've tried banging on the seat with the key turned, as suggested above, but that right side just won't let go.

Rema ... you probably already reviewed this old thread (http://gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10614), and it probably won't help (seems like the problem is INSIDE the works) but just in case....

I got the seat off, finally.  There are two problems: when the key is turned, it only moves the cable part-way (even after I lubed the cable).  It seems like there's something fiddly in the key mechanism itself.  The key was moving the cable enough to unlatch the left side (barely), but not the right side.

The second problem is that trying to get the seat up, I think I damaged the latch mechanism on the right side.  Now, even when I push the cable lever to the side, the right latch only wiggles; it doesn't retract.  The left latch retracts just fine.

Anybody who switched to a race tail have a seat latch mechanism they don't need?

Does the right side latch need a little lube?

It actually seems like the right latch is not connected to a spring any longer; you can push it in or pull it out easily, regardless of the key position.  I think I'll grind off the two rivets and open-up the mechanism.  I'll bet that the right latch is not even attached to anything anymore (which would explain why I couldn't get it to release).

For now, I have a sleeve of plastic in the right latch hole, so that the right side doesn't get hung-up again.
