Title: Gas Leak
Post by: Jeff P on November 15, 2004, 06:29:50 AM
My bike's a '96 w/~10,500 miles.

About a week ago I bought some Stabil, put it in the tank, ran the bike for a few minutes, and parked it in the garage for the winter.

Yesterday I was in the garage and noticed a faint smell of gasoline.  Looked around the bike and sure enough there was a small spot under the bike.  I looked up and saw a drop forming on the end of the petcock lever, which is pointed down in the "on" position.  Never had a problem like this before.

I've come to the bold conclusion that I've got a leaky petcock or something like that.  Did the Stabil cause it or expose a hidden problem?

Thoughts?  Do I just order a new petcock to replace the old one, or is it a matter of replacing some gaskets or something?  I'll be adding this to my list of winter jobs!

Before replacing / overhauling the petcock, make sure the hoses and connections are leak-free.  Those hoses are what ... 8 or 9 years old now?

I haven't heard of Sta-Bil causing such a thing, but that doesn't mean it's impossible.  :dunno:

I checked it out again last night, no more leak!  The leak, when it was active, was definitely coming off the end of the lever, the hose connections to the petcock were all dry.
