Title: tire pressures?
Post by: se7enty7 on November 15, 2004, 09:35:44 AM
I have a 140 width rear tire... not stock...  what should the tire pressure be?  How about the stock front?

Thanks

stock front=32

Rear I would assume would be the same as stock, which is 36

Stock front isn't 32 for my 2K GS, it's 33. Now I have MZ4 radial on front and 33 feels like low presure, and steering gets heavy, so I run it like 36, rear is a 130/80 MZ2 radial, stock should go with 36, one up, and 41 two up, so because I often ride 2 up, put it at 40 pounds. The tires have like 8,000 Km and are wearing evenly and are plenty of thread, so I guess they shoul last at least another 10,000 Kms, which would be a life like 11,000+ miles.

Anyway, the tire says the maximum pressure on the side, so check it and don't go higher than that...

Yes, 33 - 36. The theory is that the type of tyre is not the issue the preasure is specifice to the BIKE not the tyre/tire.

Incidently I have posted several times about checking the preasure regularly as I have been caught out a couple of times, I have now bought a couple of these to constantly check the preasure.

The ones I have are slightly different, GREEN=OK, Yellow= up to 5 lbs below setting and Red=over 5lbs below. You buy them each specific to the preasure required.

Wow, those pressure guards look cool, and so easy to see when you need to add air.

If anyone knows of a site in the US that sells something similar, please chime in.

thanks.

Ok, found one:

http://store.yahoo.com/eagleday/vitiprin.html

they come in increments of 2 psi in even increments, so 32, 34, 36, etc.  Looks like you have to buy 2 pairs to get a 32 and 36 for example.
$15 for the needed 2 pairs plus free shipping, from Florida.

I may order some.

The ones I got came in increments of 2 also, they are sold "single" about 2.50 / 3 pounds each but if you have to but two pairs then it looks like some "buddying-up" will have to be organised through the board.

Think I'll also get a double cylinder footpump with a gauge, one of the local stores has been doing one for three pounds.($5.40)

I am fed-up with buggering around on my hands and knees on the gas station forecourt and paying twenty pence for a puff of air. Do you guys have to pay for air??

Weaselnose, in answer to your earlier question, mine ('03) came stock with Bridgestone Exedra G550, Bridgestone make dozens, if not hundreds of types and I think these are pretty near the bottom of the heap. To be fair they are OK for day to day commuting with a bit of twistee dashing now and again. A lot of the guys go for bridgestone BT45s which are said to be a lot sportier.

Nope, here gas stations don't charge you for air, however many don't have they air equipments working properly. Recently I bought a bicycle air pump with gauge for $20+tax, since my bicycle tires need 100 psi, 30-something is nothing, and not to hard to pump air on the GS. A good way to go.

in case some of you were intested.  i'm sure i saw some of those multi-colored tire pressure things at my local Pep - boys i'm sure you could find them without having to order them online.  why pay for shipping and have to wait too?

Yup, I got mine at the local one-man-and-his-nephew second-hand dealership, they are identical to those that hairball illustrated.

Cost for air seems to be regional.  Here in Minneapolis, most gas stations have free air.  I'd say that 1 in 10 has a coin-op air compressor.  Usually these are the same shops that also have a coin-op vacuum cleaner.  It seems to me that they are just being greedy.  But the profit has got to be so slim, (what, $3/day maybe?), that it doesn't justify the annoyance.  What's next?... you have to pay a nickel extra to get a receipt?

The big difference I notice between gas stations here, is that many which have a maintenance shop provide a hose from their compressed air system; but those with no shop air have a slower, low-pressure-only pump instead.  I don't think those slower ones have a compressed tank at all.

I like to keep my bycicle tires above 100psi, so I need shop air :) .

My bike uses 26x1" tires, and can be inflated up to 110 psi, however as very little air is needed to inflate those tires using a powered air pump is to call for a disaster, as happened once the night before a triathlon race, one tire's tube blew up, just because it got 120 psi instead 110. The manual pump gauge goes up to 160 psi, so is safer for my tires, even with 100+ psi presures. Also it works great with the GS.
