Title: Just fitted a Vortex Racing Gas Cap
Post by: gobstopper on November 19, 2004, 03:44:14 PM
Hey everybody!

I just wanted to make a quick post to let everyone know that Vortex's Suzuki gas cap bases and lids WILL fit a GS500.

The base I bought is here:

Vortex Suzuki Gas Cap Base, Silver (http://www.vortexracing.com/index.php?src=directory&view=Products&srctype=display&back=Products&id=166&class0_0=1109&class0_1=1224&view=Products&submenu=Products&class0_0=1109&class0_1=1224&pos=0,5,8)

And the lid is here:

Vortex Gas Cap Lid, Silver (http://www.vortexracing.com/index.php?src=directory&view=Products&srctype=display&back=Products&id=178&class0_0=1109&class0_1=1304&view=Products&submenu=Products&class0_0=1109&class0_1=1304&pos=0,5,4)

I ordered them Wednesday night, and they showed up on my doorstep when I got home from work today, Friday.

They're a little bit pricey, but very well made.  Gosh they're pretty.

Here's what they look like. (http://www.kneedraggers.com/html/Vortex/gascaps.jpg)

The GS500's cap base appears to have 8 screws, but 4 are false.  The false ones are at 12, 3, 6, and 9-o'clock as you're sitting on the bike.  Use a 4 mm allen wrench to pull them out.  You must unlock the cap before trying to remove it.  Insert the new base, and add 4 screws with the allen wrench.  Put a couple of dabs of grease on the threads of the lid, and screw it on.  You're done.  It takes longer to type than it does to do.

My lock started to stick, and I bent a key to hell and gone, so I figured I'd replace it.

I called Vortex to confirm whether the cap would fit or not and the guy there said "I'm not certain, but as long as it's a Suzuki with 4 bolts, it should.  I can't imagine they would change the base circle model to model."  I appreciated his educated guess, but telling me that he wasn't certain.

Overall:  Good product, good customer service, fast shipping.  Solid A.

Edited to show pic.

No key required to open it. It just screws on.

btw...there have been problems associated with those caps on some bikes. They would create a vacuum in the tank and cease gas flow. Just something to watch out for.

Title: Suzuki caps

All of the Suzuki sport bike fuel caps are the same for 2000 back to the late 80's.  I haven't messed with a newer bike.

I have had two different years of SV, three GSXRs, and  4 GS500s.  They all used the same fuel cap. The only differences were the colors.  Most of them have silver outer rings with black centers.
