Title: RPM Taking off
Post by: mtbman on November 23, 2004, 10:36:22 AM
Wow these carbs are  a fun chalange.  I have rebuilt and rejetted my carbs, and chased down many problems.  The new one is the bike will take off on it own, I let it get up to about 6000 rpm before I hit the kill switch.  Basicly, it feels like the choke is on.  I have cleaned the entire carb, and checked for vacuum leaks at the manifold and the vacuum take off ports.  Any other ideas.  Thanks for the help.

I had similar symptoms when I tore down my carbs. It was driving me nuts. I pulled everything, double checked all the movable parts and o-rings and gaskets. I confirmed that the choke was working and not binding.

Put it back together and it has run fine ever since! I probably fixed something I screwed up before but I have no idea what :dunno:

I tell my wife, sometimes you have to take things apart because demons are trapped in there.

good luck

Sounds like it's set lean.  Check the air/fuel mixture screws, should be backed out about 3 turns.  Also check the float heights, if they are set too low, they will also restrict fuel flow and cause a lean condition.

Thanks for the tips, hopefully I have a lean demon to get rid of.  It was doing something similar due to being rich before, maybe I went too far when I tried to lean it out.

Don't forget to check that your throttle cable is routed correctly.
