Check ebay. Item #4506029915 or search "ape tensioner".
The guy sells them for $38.00 which is much cheaper than buying them direct from APE. I picked up a couple extras for myself. Straight up dude to deal with. :thumb:

why do manufacturers not use these if they are better?  The part certainly looks simpler... might save some money..

that would be to easy, which makes me think (and this is only the pessimist in me) that the parts are designed to fail after a given time. but seriously, i,ve only done 4000km since feb 2001 (summer use, no rain)so the auto one is sticking ( although i have stripped and cleaned it a few times )probably, anyway i,m getting a manual so i can set and forget, (well for about 2000 mls )  :x

how do you know it's sticking?

when i start from cold engine is quite, after approx 6 mls it starts to rattle on the overun, if i accelerate rattling stops so i think cct is stuck in cold position, as engine gets hot chain stretches cct dosent take up slack because its stuck in cold position, engine cools down when stopped, chain shrinks to original position to start  the cycle again .hopes this makes sense

Being "better" is relative to its use and application.
The manual cct's requires maintenance and if not then major engine damage can occur. The automatic cct's provide constant pressure reducing the regular checking & adjusting. Auto cct's are better for ride and forget, less attention required.

On some bikes they are hard to get to. Take the Honda F4i, it has a known history of cct failures. Manual ones are not a viable option since so much stuff has to be removed to adjust it.

The GS isn't the ideal candidate for the manual CCT either ... take off all the crap down to carbs to get at it... or you can maybe use those nifty rotator handle crank ratchet head doohickey dealybob thingy wrenches... from the side ... dunno... But my eliminator has it on the left side and is prone to failure ... so been wanting to get one of these ... anyway being the smartass cheapskate that I am with more T6 than I can shake a stick at I might make one ...
Cool.
Srinath.
