Title: New Key?
Post by: ConanLloyd on November 24, 2004, 07:35:17 PM
So I was an idiot and lost the only key for my GS.  Do I just go to a Suzuki dealership and ask for a new one?

i have progressive insurance.  i opted to get roadside assistance. so if i lose my keys all i gotta do is pay the cost of the new key. i dont have to pay the locksmith service.  well sure enough after 3 weeks of owning my gs i lose the damn keys.  so i call RSA and have them send out a locksmith. but before i had them come out i wanted to know how much the new key was gonna cost.  4, 5, 6 bucks maybe? hell no. they say 90-120 dollars depending on what bike i have.  screw them. i just looked harder :)

oh but to better answer ur question. no u can't just go buy a key.  they need ur vin number or some other number to be able to look up how to cut the new key.  but its damn expensive.

If you only had only one key, you probably won't have the little numbered tag that came with the bike new with it's two keys so the dealer is probably out of the question, ask anyway.

In the short term I am sure it can be hot-wired but looking ahead the least expensive option might be to fit a whole new barrel or lock from a locksmith or your friendly family hardware store. If you do this don't forget the seat lock.

Sorry, should have said in the last post. There are a couple of locksmiths around here that will make a key at the roadside, normally only takes them ten mins (frightening realy) I think a Volvo blank will do it, If you are short on locksmiths try the local recovery garage.
