Title: Need a new front rotor, but want an aftermarket
Post by: South East Rocket on December 02, 2004, 09:18:53 AM
All my unanswered questions:

Anyone have the specs for the GS's front rotor?
Do I just need to have a compatible diameter & bolt pattern?
Anything exciting available? -Saw this on ebay

I just bought  new rotors for my bike, and there is no fancy ones out there that I found in my search, check out Kerry's rotor page to find the best deals (though check the website and see if the price has changed) I found that there was a sale on at one of the sites and I got a better deal.  Yes there are specific specs and I consider making some of my own but I decided that the time to design and then build them wasn't worth it when I could focus on other fun things for my bike that if I screw up won't kill me  ;)  Good luck in your search.

Just bought me a 2nd hand GSF 1200 (Bandit 1200) rotor. Looks like it will fit just fine, payed less then 200$ for it. I'm going to install it this weekend.

I heared the bandit 400 rotor fits too, and if I'm not mistaken, some GSXR model rotor fits too.

The Bandit rotor fits, yes. That eBay offering... I dunno. Doesn't look as if it has the correct axial offset of the fixing plane to the rim. the GS rotor is slightly dished. That Hayabuse rotor seems not to be.

Any idea what grades of steel are appropriate for brake rotors?

w/ the stock rotor only after market specificaly is EBC which sells a "racey" version and a sort of OEM replacement. Change out the front end to a katana and brembo makes a bunch, EBC again and a few other companies, and I'll bet most of the "sport" 600 rotors will fit as well but I'm not sure on a cross reference on that

Take a look at the first 2 pictures in the HOW TO: Front Rotor Replacement (http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13871) thread (in the FAQ forum).

See how the rear rotor is just a flat slab of metal?  Now look at the front rotor, and see how the plane of the rotor is "offset" from the part that mounts to the hub.

You'd probably want to use a steel with greater than 0.6% carbon content and after you've machined it you'll want to heat treat it and then temper it.
