New chains I use kerosene to clean off all the white sticky crap (I think it is white lithium grease). Later usually use a hand dish soap (dawn or joy). Sometimes I will use kerosene to get it really clean. I had been using a Honda lube that does not last in rain but it cleans up easily. Recently I have started using Chain Wax lube since I have been caught in the rain several times.

just wondering if diesel fuel would work to clean the chain since it's mostly oil anyways....??
