Hello, I have a 01 with 18500 miles on it, recently been noticing that I have been adjusting my chain more and more, to the point that adjusters are all the way back. Now slopp is in chain again and when decellerating there is considrable clack and clinking coming from somewhere down there. I noticed that around the area of the front drive sprocket (have not removed cover yet) there is like rust dust all over, the chain has same residue on outsides surfaces also. I plan to replace chain and sproket along with both tires and chain guide, if that's worn too. But what is causing this situation?
Is original "o-ring" type chain better than after market chain without "o-rings". It seems a chain with a "master" link in it would be easier to change and therefore lubricate.
What is a good after market chain?

AFAIK, all chains have a master link. Usually only racers nowadays(maybe motox too, I dunno) use chains without O-rings, but they lubricate them heavily the night before and day of each race. O-ring chains last longer, and X-ring chains supposedly last longer than O rings.
Wipe all of the chain dust and broken o-rings and whatever other crap is behind and around the front sprocket with Simple Green or whatever. Check the sprockets for excessive wear.
Ideally the sprockets and chains are replaced at the same time to ensure even wear on all parts...apparently when you use a new chain on old sprockets, the chain will wear faster than if you had used new sprockets.
Stock chain usually is link less... I'll buy a regina or a did X ring, and 18K is enough to destroy the chain and front sprocket ... rear should be useable through another chain I think... Gsjack has logged over 200,000 mi+ on bikes and never changed a rear sproket... so they could very well be useable beyond 1-2 chains ... Never mind what the actual tensile stress and crap is... chain that hold the seal better last longer, and X rings are better ... a lot better.
