Title: Installing National Cycle F-18 Windshield
Post by: abronco1 on December 12, 2004, 06:10:20 PM
Does anyone have this windshield?  I just bought it on ebay, and have attached it so that it's "on" but I can't figure out how to attach the brackets and other nuts and bolts.  Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

I just pulled one off my project bike. The only attachments the fellow had were the two stock headlight screws through the long slots of the NC screen. The NC clamps were pinching the stock triangle brackets via the curved slots on the screen.

Use this information at your own risk. I don't know if he had it installed correctly or not.  :dunno:

I didn't care for the look but that is a personal decision.
You know, like blonde, brunette, redheads, etc.  :)

I've got one of them but switched it up recently. I'm doing this off the top of my head, can't remember if I've got the F-16 or F-18, but what I can tell you is that putting it on was basically a piece of cake so long as you keep your headlight in order. On mine, I just mounted it right around the headlight, using the two existing bolts holding the headlight on. It would be a good idea to take the lens off and get access to the inside of the headlight assembly, because I believe there are a couple of extra nuts or whatnot going on in there. Pull out the bolts, run them through the holes on the shield, and bolt them back up.
The way the thing mounted on mine worked out in a strangely good way - I'm not sure it's intentional, but you could fold the shield forward to access the gauges etc, and you could also have ample room to carry a cheesesteak or bag of fast food in the space over top the bars under the shield..

Bronc, did it not come with installation instructions? Of course if used, it may not have. Perhaps there are some on National's homepage?

If 7bucks had used the clamp screws like the fellow did on my project bike, he wouldn't have such a nice "feature." The clamping screws and brackets seemed a bit of a stretch to me.

Once again, if you are happy.... :thumb:

This is from National's site.

Notice the bracket just above the turn signal. This is inserted into the curved slots on the screen. The long slots have the headlight screws going through them. You WILL have to take the headlight out of the housing to do this.

Yeah, the pic's not a GS but the hardware is similar.

Thanks for all the replies.....7bucks, I did take the headlight lens off (it's placed on my front fender on top of a diaper towel for protection).  I did place the windshield right above the headlight and re-used the original bolts and nuts that keeps the headlight assembled.  I guess my real question is this:  Are the two initial bolts the only bolts "required" for installation?  Or "must" I use the brackets?  It did come with the instructions, but could not figure out how to install the bracket properly.
