so, anybody think about trying to scrape together an undertail exhaust for our beloved gs 500's? or would it involve too much chopping and rewelding? also, out of the current exhausts available, which makes the most performance difference, can sombody post me a like to a manufacturer web site?
Thanks
Matt
A high mount exhaust would be easier. You could have any custom exhaust shop do it. Undertail exhaust would mean a total modification of the rear end. The problem is that when your rear shock compresses there isn't enough room there for a muffler to fit so you would have to chop off the entire rear end and weld it at a more extreme angle. I've never seen it done on a gs before.
i was thinking about it for a while but decided against it
too much work to make get everything to fit right
so i am going to try to make an underbody instead
Actually maybe its just me ... but I dont see the big deal in having an undertail exhaust ... OK it does work on the 916, but it almost makes every other make/model look overly contrived and complicated ... cos there is always that big ass pipe that runs outside the swingarm and up under the seat. And guess what, sibce its longer and has more bends in it ... it has to be larger diameter. The hi pipe OK I can understand that ... just in case you were nicky hayden ... you'd absolutely need that ... but undertail ... just plain wrong In my book ... But hey dont listen to me ... I think the 01+ tail while it does look nicer than the 89-00 one, I think the way they fit together is not as good as the older type ... of course you messing with it less cos its not hooked up to the tank. So no removing/loosening it to do valve or carb work.
Cool.

they has a better picture (from the back)...can't find it anymore :dunno:
i thought that would be cool too, kinda like a buell or darius' yamaha r1 from the sept 2004 issue of super streetbike. lemme know if you work anything out for that.

the problem with a undertail on a gs500 is the subframe...it's too low unlike on most sportbikes who have a high subframe...it could be done with a very thin exhaust canister but then the rear tire may rub on the canister....you can fix that if you remove the rear fender all together and have a canister sit all the way up to the seat but then you lose the little trunk
Is that a tail/seat kit that they offer? ... it looks kind of like an R6 tail. AFAIK all of the kits they offer have a monoseat, not the separate front/rear.
dom, no, that's an undertail exhaust mod they had done...it's not being offered. trust me...the tailend looks hot! a better picture has been posted on this forum before if you want to search for it...
i think this is the picture you're talking abou, JetSwing
(by the way, the race is ON on who gets it first! hahahhhaha)
