Just wanted to give an update on some work that I've been doing and work that Srinath helped with too.
1\ 15T Front Sprocket - I bought the JT Sprockets JTF516.15 (Dennis Kirk Part #80-985-15) as it has similar thickness dimensions and a ridge similar to the stock 16T. The mod took about 15 mins and was well worth it. Below is a link to my previous posts and research on this (see 1/2 way down the page):
http://gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13703&start=40
2\ Wileyco Titanium Exhaust - Working with Srinath, we tried a different manufacturer aftermarket connector pipe. But, the angle forced the can to rest against the swingarm. So, I sent Srinath measurements (IDs, ODs, lengths, etc.) for the stock header pipe where I cut it, etc. He fabricated the pipe with the bends where I approximated (mind you all of this via email). The pipe arrived two days ago. Just finished painting the flange and weld (non-stainless) and installing it as a slip on. I may have it welded on at some point though. But, it works great! Thanks again Srinath!

(Oh and I bought an extra stainless can from the Dennis Kirk scratch and dent store on eBay for $50 as a spare).
3\ Fenderectomy - Using a pencil, ruler and Dremel with a cutting tool, I removed most of the rear fender, without buying an after market kit. I may however do a complete kit to get the smaller tail lights. But, eh...it works for now and is a smooth cut.

4\ Center stand removal - Need to do this to accomodate the exhaust...unless I wanted to fabricate something to hold it down and away from the chain. I've never used a center stand, so I opted to remove it.
That's about it for now. More to come.

Why did you pixellate your license plate? You steal the bike?

Ummm...hey, I live in Jerz right!? 'Course it's stolen. Lol. Just kidding. Honestly, kinda stupid huh? I just see most license plate pics posted that way. But, it's not like you can't see it on the street. Oh well.
Centerstand ... well no one reads my posts - especially the ones that buy my stuff ... :x ... I know that for sure now ...
Find a Car tire shredded and lying on the road ... cut off 1 inch by 2 inch by 1 unch thick chunk of it ... and ziptie it to the centerstand where the stand hits the lower shock mount ... you'll see if you lie down next to the bike on the right side ... bada bing, bada boom new shock bracket ...
BTW that is the way the old bikes used to be, the KZ440, the old GS400's etc ... they had to get all fancy for this ...
Cool.
Srinath.
To keep the centerstand from hitting the exhaust just zip tie a piece of rubber to it...like a chunk from a piece of tire you find laying on the side of the road.
Lol...oops...should've read that. Well, I can always put it back on if I want.
Scott
looks good except for the "dents" on the midpipe.
anyway to smooth that out sri??
Quote from: DomWhy did you pixellate your license plate? You steal the bike?
i have a program that can de-pixelate it...
What dents ... that is some pic shadow crap ... shadow of a fence or somehitng ... I sent him a smoot one ... except for the bends where the pipe has a ripple ... that cant be helped ... SS pipe in a muffler pipe bender = couple ripples ...
Cool.
Srinath.
Do you guys mean this dent/ripple? I assumed what Srinath said...couldn't be avoided with his pipe bender.

Center stands become very useful when you need to lube chains, change tires, check oil, adjust valves blah blah blah. You can also drill a hole and bolt a heavy duty door stop to it. I had the same issue with my V&H- I went with the door stop.
Putting it back on is also a huge PITA- the dual springs are hell to get back on.
Yea even the mid pipe I bought years ago for another bike and probably by a different manufacturer ... has those dimples ... stainless is brittle and doesn't flow and bend smooth like steel does ... that 304 is extra worse ... hard as hell and tough as nails made from 304 I guess ... but they dont bend, heating it isn't gonna help, it will make it cave in ... just bend it and live with a ripple or 2 ... paint it black, makes it less visible if you dont want it seen ... OK fine anyone complains too much I'll have to make it out of :guns: steel ... that'll teach ya :guns: ... I know its an elegant solution sorta marred by some rather weird looking ripples ... but hey there is always steel ...
Cool.
Srinath.

don't matter...i still want one since it fits nicely on an '04! make me one sri! let me know when its ready!

Honestly, it's not that that noticable on the bike except under certain lighting. You're right...paint it black and it wouldn't be as noticable. Hell, the header pipe looks like crap.
You'd probably have to coat the inside and outside of a plain steel one...vapor on the inside would cause corrosion.
Vapor inside ... not after the first 5 mins of running ... its all coated with carbon after that ... heck I have a snoutless pipe ... BTW that snout has a valid reason for being there, not just looks ... that in rain when parked fill up with water ... ok a little water gets in there ... no rust ... I'll spit water when I start it for a few mins ... then its all good. So snout keeps water out ... who'd have thought ...
Cool.
Srinath.
Hi, just a new person on the block
So the question is what was the aprox. gain from these two mods..?
Specifically for the Spocket ....?
Thanks
Pavlos

Good point.

Well, the sprocket gives you a better low-end gear ratio. What this means is that you will be able to basically accelerate more quickly (i.e. faster off the line, better ability to pass vehicles, better ability to pull wheelies, etc.). However, you do lose some on the top end (i.e. the RPMs will be higher at speed and you may not be able to go as fast overall...once over say 100+ mph).
The exhaust. Well...there are three main performance mods for better base motorcycle engine performance and they deal with air and fire. A performance exhaust basically gives you a more direct and open exhaust flow (allowing the exhaust to exit the bike more efficiently), thus increasing power. A performance air filter (next on my list) gives you a more direct air intake (better combustion). A rejet kit (also next on my list) takes the carbs from a lean to a more normal 'richer' (adding more fuel to the fuel/air mixture) setting to compensate for the air intake and exhaust modification, thus allowing better combustion and more power. This avoids a "lean misfire" which you hear as a backfire. Also note, that most US bikes are set too lean from the factory due to regulatory guidelines on MPG and emissions. So, a rejet can be good even if not doing both an exhaust and air mod.
Make sense?

What kind of affect will the new sprocket have on gas milage? :dunno:
Thanks,
Roy

It will lower it, because the engine is reving higher to attain the same speeds. But, if you are looking for performance, you're gonna lose MPG.
Scott
Lower gas mileage ... but not as much lower as you might think ... Throttle position controls gas mileage ... you'll turn higher revs for same throttle position, and make near about the same speed ... and almost the same gas mileage ... maybe 2-4% less ... your 1 tooth on front = ~6-7% lower gearing up top...
Cool.

Could you make a quick sprocket tutorial or do you have any pictures from the install for some of us mechanical dummies? :dunno: :)

yes pleeeeeeeease. . .

OK Its gonna be a while before I swap sprokets ... I am broke and un employed, so I got no money and no need to go anywhere ... so I aint spending 100 bucks on a sproket and chain ... BTW the bike does need it ... no doubting that ... I might also hock the bike too before I have to ... so dont hold your breath ... On a side note if one of y'all leave your bike un attended around my house I might steal your sprokets ... then I'll be sure to get some pics ... :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:
Cool.

Figures. A month or two ago I concentrated so much on shooting VIDEO footage of a sprocket swap that I didn't take sufficient
still photos.
I won't be editing that footage until I can make myself finish the Valve Adjustment DVD. (Which still didn't happen this weekend. :x ) But I might be persuaded to toss all 10 minutes (or so) of raw, un-narrated footage onto a "Rough Edit" valve adjustment CD.
But seriously, video footage of this procedure is pretty much overkill. Pull the shift lever, pull the 5 case bolts, and there is the sprocket. Pop the snap ring with whatever you have, pull the old sprocket, put on the new sprocket, and reassemble in reverse. If everything is clean in there (and you have snap ring pliers) the job should take you 10 minutes
tops.
OK, if you're going down a tooth or two add another 5 to 7 minutes to adjust the chain slack.
srinath: i wish you were still here in toronto and i'd leave my bike at your place in a second! i could just imagine all the work you could do for my bike if i left it in your supervision. . .
kerry: you make the whole job sound so easy. . .what tools are involved, if you don't mind me asking?
too bad you didn't get a chance to finish the valve video this weekend. . .guess there's just never enough time for anything. . .
by the way, did you get my pm for an order of the cd?
cheers,
joel
Really gentlemen, the sprocket swap is easy as can be:
1\ Remove the side cover (approximately 6 bolts) for the front sprocket. Remember the location order (as the bolts are all different lengths). The clutch cable connection will just slide off with the cover once all the bolts are removed.
2\ Remove the clip from the shaft on the outside of the existing sprocket, using some type of spreader (I used a needlenose plier).
3\ Slide the existing sprocket off (the chain will come off with it on the front).
4\ Remove the old sprocket from the chain and replace it with the new one.
5\ Push the new sprocket on (with the chain) and replace the clip.
6\ Replace the side cover and bolts.
7\ Loosen the rear axle bolts.
8\ Adjust the rear chain tensioning bolts (located on the back of the swing arm near the rear axle bolts) until the chain has approximately the same play in it that it had prior to the swap.
9\ Retighten the rear axle bolts.
Pretty straightforward really. Took about 15 mins start to finish.
Scott
2XS: brilliant. . .now let's hope that someone will kindly put this into the FAQ section for 'How-To Switch your Sprockets'
cheers,
joel

yeah..i was looking for that thread that i posted a while ago that kerry provided pics. he beat me to it...as usual
