Title: I bought my bike a month ago - i have few questins
Post by: Shon on December 21, 2004, 05:26:05 PM
Well ,for begining .HELLO everyone,
i am from Novi Sad,Serbia and i bought my first bike a month age.
It is an 2001, suzuki GS500E.It has 4955 km on the speedometer. The only thing that i was riding before this bike was 1997 Yamaha XT600.I had it for three months during this summer.

Everyone who saw the bike was sure that i bought a new bike,it hasn't got a single skrech and the engine is well polished.I dont know when the oil was changed ,but it still has golden colour.

I was able to put just around 100 miles on it becouse it too cold here now.

I had to hold the choke on for 3-4 mins before it starts to work properly ( the temp outside was about 5 C) .Is that normal?

I would like to fit a wider rear tyre ( about 150 or 160 ) Is that possible?

Is there any way that i can gat back of a bike (tail) littlebit hogher ,so it would have more sporty look. And my girlfriend likes to ride on it ,she has around 65 kg (i have 80 kg) so it would be better if the back was littlebit higher.( i heard that the rear spring i 7 way adjusable).

How long beafore the first cluth change if i ride it normaly?

Thanks.
Glad to with you!

Hi, welcome to the board.

3-4 minutes of choke sounds right if there are #37.5 pilots in the carburetors, especially when it is 5 C.

The biggest tire you can run on the rear is a 140- 80- 17 and it will rub on the brake bar for a few km.

The only way to make the seat higher is to cut the frame underneath, add some metal, and reweld it.  You might consider putting on the tail from an R1 or R6.

http://pantablo500.tripod.com/pablosgs500page/id13.html

"The nice thing. The front two mounting holes on the frame are a perfect location for the ones on the R6 tail. next nice thing: the R6 tail has several mounting holes on the bottom that were zip tied to the subframe.

Disadvantages/challenges. The frame sticks out about a half inch right near the end of the tail. I had to eliminate the fender completely to resolve this, except under the seat area but it's all gone at the rear. The plastic of the R6 tail touches the top of the wheel well., right in front of where the seat spring was in the middle. The stock R6 front seat wont mount due to shape of tank and what not. Also rubber mount on the bottom of seats don't line up with previous contact spots, so if I were to sit down on the seat I'd end up cracking the plastic of the new tail. Not to mention trying to find a way to make the passenger seat have support under it. The luggage rack stick way down and had to be cut off. The seat lock had to be relocated or hang down low. Overall teh subframe sits just in line with the bottom of the R6 tail. Overall I would recommend it if you have an older bike needing new rear bodywork and a little love. R6 tails can be had on ebay for about $60-$100.

I'm 6'1" and I actually redid my stock seat making it about 2 inches taller for a more comfortable seating position. This new tail will actually lower the seat height about an inch or two below stock, depending on how thick I build my own seat. Very bent seating position overall.

If I didn't carry a passenger with me, I'd buy the Airtech R6 race tail conversion and mount that... it would have fiberglass covering the seat section, I could just slap on some seat foam. Plus the back would be a solid unit, would have the little section where their is either a passenger seat or seat cowl... basically cleaner lines. If I were racing this is the way I'd go. It costs the same price as the airtech GS mono seat tail, plus it looks way cooler."

Well, the fix to get the back end up easily and make it a better bike for 2 up is to get a Katana shock. You can find all kinds of info on that if you search.. I think Pablo has a big write up on his webpage too (http://pantablo500.tripod.com/pablosgs500page/id12.html).

welcome! first try a Katana shock. its a direct bolt in replacement for the stock peice of crap that comes on the gs. that will raise your rear about 1/2-1". A gsxr shock will raise your rear a little more but is more complicated to install. A sv650 shock will raise it quite a bit (but is no better than the stock gs shock).

I mounted a 150 series tire and it was okay but handling was a little funny, especially after it wore down a bit. This is because the tire gets pinched a bit on the too-narrow rim. I mounted a 140/80/17 tire after that and the handling was much better. My 140 did not rub on anything on my 2001 gs.

also, when riding 2-up change the preload setting on the shock (tool in kit under seat) to a higher number. Stock setting is 4 I think and you should up it to 6 or 7 for 2-up.

Welcome!

5C is about 41F... 4 minutes to warm up is OK at that temperature.  Although, you should have 40 pilot carburetor jets in Serbia, not 37.5.  I think that only Americans get the tiny pilots.  If you ever have a reason to clean your carburetors, be sure that the pilot jets are not partially clogged.

I'm not sure how long the Katana was produced in Europe; but many shocks from other, heavier bikes will fit.  For example, from
http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=76948#76948:

Quote from: seshadri_srinathA B6 shock does fit bit its not as good as a Katana or other...
Katana shocks are great, but be prepared to grind the linkage a little if not long clevise. No big deal, just grind till it fits... The shocks that fit and work great are... Kat 6/7 89 - 03, RF 600, RF 900, B12, GSXR 7/11 88-95 on the 7 and 89-99 on the 11, and maybe some more...

("B6" and "B12" are the Bandit 600 and 1200, I think.  The RF600 and RF1200 are "GSF Bandit RF" bikes, I think, and may be more available in Europe than a Katana.  You want a shock with a long clevise.

I have no idea how geopolitically accurate my 2002 version of MS Streets & Trips is, but here's a higher-up view that may help folks put your location in context:
