Title: Windscreen/Windshield for GS500
Post by: Teecegirl on December 29, 2004, 10:42:30 AM
Hi all,

I'm a new rider and am still learning.  One problem is seem to have is with the wind pushing me around in the lane.  I assume it's something I'll have to learn to adjust to, but I was wondering if getting a bigger windscreen would help.  Any thoughts?

Many threads on this already, just search for windshield and windscreen with the search feature.

Popular smaller shields are some of the F ones from National Cycle: F-15, F-16.  Mainly for looks and a bit of wind protection.  Big ass touring shields, like the Plexistar 2,  are best if you really want wind protection.  Ugly but it does the job.

Note these are gonna keep the wind off you, but won't do anything for crosswinds and whatnot that you feel are blowing you around.  Nothing short of a bigger, heavier bike will do that.

Looks like Zero Gravity may come out with windscreens for the GS.

YEAH!!!     Thanks for finding that.  I've been so depressed at the lack of GS500F stuff out there.  I'm glad they're starting to make things for this bike.

Am I being a baby, or does the wind bother everyone initially?  I guess I'm just shocked at the force of the wind.  I never felt it when I was riding on the back ... haha.  My poor friend was feeling it all.

You'll ge tused to it. When I started riding I was the same way, but eventually I got used to it. But I still got a NC F-16, looks pretty cool if you ask me. Good Luck on finding what you want.

To address the problem with the wind - Are you finding yourself stiffening up when the wind hits you? Relax. React. Lean into the gust; either put a shoulder into it or lean the bike into it (if you lean the bike, don't lean with it). Don't let the wind blow you around, but don't fight it (you'll get tired and distracted).

Hope this helps.

I have found that I can counteract a crosswind best by counter steering.  A quick application of pressure to the up-wind grip will instantly initiate a  lean into the wind. :thumb:

Teecegirl, I am the same way.  I have just started riding and once I hit 55+ that wind really starts to get to me.  I think it is partly because I sit too upright on the bike and the wind comes in under my helmet, which in turn makes it feel as if my helmet is about to come off.  Also when I do shoulder checks my helmet moves.  I wonder if possibly it may be a bit to big though it is a medium.  I guess I need to try on a small in the same brand and see if it fits better.  After that my only worry is the visor fogging up on me.  Oh well.  :dunno:

just go faster and faster till you are cutting through the wind like a...seriously, keep your profile low to the tank. be one with your bike. it makes a huge difference.

Teecegirl,

You could also try a Laminar Lip.  See: http://gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10970&highlight=

for my earlier comments.

And, after lowsiding and bouncing my "F" on its nose, the left rearview mirror was torn off but the "Lip" stayed on the windscreen.  I'm happy that it did.  Better a scratched lip thana battered windscreen.

Good luck!
