Title: Emptying the tank...
Post by: JetSwing on January 01, 2005, 11:25:40 AM
i will be powder coating my tank. i was wonder how you guys empty the tank. i've had a hell of time emptying it the last time...i think i'd used cloth to soak the gasoline dry  :dunno:

that was pre 01 model tank but this time, it'll be 01...could it be any better...?

do i even need to worry about drying the inside of the tank before powder coating?

any suggestions would be appreciated...

After removing petcock and emtying as much as you can ... shove a towel in it and soak it up ... repeat and repeat till you dont get a large wet patch ... then start up the largest automobile you got, preferably one wihtout a Cat ot a muffler and wait till it gets hot ... and shove that tail pipe in the tank's mouth ... 10-15 mins later dry as a bone and blazing hot to boot ...
Cool.

or you can do it the way my dad thought me....take a thin hose, stick it in the gastank all the was down, make sure the other end is lower than the higher end of the hose (the one that's inside the gastank) then suck on the lower end of the hose and when the fuel starts to flow you can stop sucking and spit out that gasoline

If you flush the tank first with water, then you can use the towel method and then a hair dryer.

OK I'd not let water anywhere near it ... water evaporates much slower ... and makes it rust ...

curious. . .
was wondering if it's possible to drain the entire tank
by placing a tube over the drain screw,
loosening the screw,
and putting the other end of the tube connected to a container. . .

would that work?

cheers,
joel

That will drain most of the tank ... assuming that the fuel selector switch is set to PRI.  But it still won't get ALL of the fuel out.

Why not?  Here's one reason: the fuel tank petcock and filter is "set into" the bottom of the tank, so on the inside it looks like this:

thanks for lots of good suggestions...though i think srinath is just trying to see if i can blow up the gas tank... :?

GRU, sucking with a hose is a good idea too...if there a enough gas is the tank, you don't really have to lower the hose (down pressure from the gasoline will do the job) but i wonder how well it'll work when there very little left in the tank... :dunno: i might have to suck the rest in my mouth and spit it out or just drink it

what about a small gas pump...though your idea is pretty much the same, GRU.

OK the GS tank has these pockets right by where the side panels connect to the tank ... starwalt has refered to it in his earlier post ... those will be near impossible to empty ... hose wont get in there and stay there reliably ... Car exhaust man ... the best ... wont even smell like gas once you do it right ...
Cool.

What if you're not strong enough to pick up the car and stick it down the tank?   :P

I'd just do the rag thing...  I've done that without fireworks...
