edit:
NEVERMIND I just returned that silly walmart thing and got a YB10L-A2 at Pep Boys.
--------------------
Just bought the Wal-mart sealed "EverStart" battery (ES12BS) that many of you say can be used in the GS.
I don't understand how it's going to work.
1)When on it's side, with the Negatice terminal down, it barely squeezes in, so even if I re-route the bike's Neg. wire down under there, there's no room for it anyways.
2)The battery's vent opening will be down under there too, so won't the sealed battery just drain when it's layed in there? (I thought sealed batteries were sealed?!)
3)The brackets on my bike's battery wires are too narrow to even fit onto the battery terminals. They would have to be flattened out, which is super ghetto in my book. Hard to sell an abused looking bike.
A picture of someone's ES12BS installed would help, or any advice at all.
Did someone put the wrong battery in the box I bought??
Thnx :)
why would you put it on its side?? :dunno:
is that the only way it'll fit in gs? did you buy a car battery?

About a dozen topics on this message board say to put in sideways. :P

the one i bought (made for motorcycle not a car  ) was just about the same size as the stock battery...the only thing different was the overflow valve was on the wrong side.
For next time (if there IS a next time) the pictures in the rerouting battery cable (http://gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11512) thread might help.
KeLL's Canadian Tire battery may or may not be the same as the WalMart unit, but since Srinath's instructions seemed to work for her.... :dunno:

Thanks Kerry. That is one thread I actually didn't find in my search. The ES12BS I got was too tall - so tall it just barely squeezed in sideways, leaving no room for the Negative battery wire to connect.
Just filled and am currently charging my new YB10L-A2.
OK The battery isn't too tall ... just looks that way ...
The negative goes on the bottom and the cable needs to be routed to come up through the bottom ... there is no drain ... its sealed ...
The positive stays up on top and minor routing of that cable is all that's needed ... now the biggest thing that fooked me up in the 7 bikes I fit one of the ES12's in ... the auxilliary negative line ... I have had to extend it in cases, twist it for better contact in cases or left it bloody well alone in cases ... I'd put up a pic but its dark outside and looks like it may be cold ... tommorow then ...
The ES12 battery is such that you can push it to the back and stick the socket wrench on the negative terminal bolt and unscrew it with it still in the bike ... then you lift it a 1/2 inch and undo the positive ... its easier to remove and fit back that a regular battery ... in 4 years I never had a leak ... on 5 different bikes ... a vulcan, a virago, 2 GS'es, 1 eli ... and those are just mine ... I fit them in some other GS'es as well ...
And you wanna see a car battery in a GS ... come to my house with a car battery ... I'll fit it in my 89 ... more likely a lawn mower battery ... I got an extended battery box ...
Heck wait a few mins ...
Cool.
Srinath.
Here is the pic of the 2 side by side ...

They are nearly the same height ... if that extra height bothers you ... take the seat and shave or remove that foam pad that is in front, right behind the tounge that goes under the tank bracket ... or remove the thick pad on the bottom of battery box and replace it with a thinner fun foam type thing ... or just run it as is ... its fine ... You'd need to stuff some cardboard under each of those square nuts to help keep it in place as you wrestle it in sideways ... but rest is easy ...
Cool.

Srinath- Thanks for the detailed response.
I suspect that the battery in the ES12BS box that I bought was not an ES12BS. By too tall, I mean that when I turned it on it's side and slid it down into the battery compartment, it was too wide - it barely fit. It was a really tight fit - I don't see how I could have attached the cables.
Anyways, I returned it and got a regular battery that fits exactly the way the OEM one does, except the vent is on the left.
Cheers
Oy vey and you returned it ... its the ES14BS ... barely fits in the box sideways due to its height ... yup ES14BS ... freaking hell its a damn $65 battery you walked out the store with for $50 ... whooo hooo ... but wait ... you dont have an eliminator 1000 ... oops ... Yea that will fit a eli 1000 like a glove ... Of course it makes enough juice to light up a small town or light up the GS'es elictrical system so the whole town will see it as it burns up ...
Cool.
Srinath.
