I'm about a step from buying a 2001 from another member here, so I run through all the finances, and of course, insurance is a necessary one. I've been getting quotes from insurance companies linked from webbikeworld.com (http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-insurance/).
So before I begin making calls, I was hoping for some feedback.
Basic info: 22 yrs old, first bike, 1 traffic violation in the past 3 yrs, limited credit history
Bodily Injury Liability: $20,000 per person, $40,000 per accident
Property Damage Liability: $15,000 per accident
Comprehensive: $500 Deductible
Collision: $500 Deductible
declined uninsured motorists option
Online quotes (annual premiums):
Progressive: $1448
GEICO (family is insured through them): $1717.00 (Good Lord!)
Bikeline (http://www.bike-line.com/): $440 <--?
My questions are: why the $1000 disparity? Is it b/c of service/reliability? Anybody heard of Bikeline (Markel American Insurance Company), or better yet, anybody insured through them? Where do most younger, inexperienced riders go to for insurance? Thanks.
try State Farm insurance...
I'm 21, w/ a GS500 and a CBR F4i,
Full coverage, plus 250,000 life insurance, new rider, 2 points on my record, $155 a month...
They by far are the best I've seen. And if you have a car insured w/ them, they'll insure ur bike for like 30 bucks a month, full coverage
Bikeline had the lowest quote for me. $214 for 50/100, with comp and collision ($250 deductibles). I paid $14 more per year for $250 deductible versus $500. Everyone else was 2-5x higher.
I'm 34, clean record, first time biker, 98 gs500.
Oh, I got an online quote from Bikeline, but then I called in and asked for the best rate, and the price dropped maybe 30%.
I think they automatically include a $500 accessory package in this rate also.
Haven't had a claim so can't speak about that.
State Farm for me also, very good rates. Complete full coverage for me is on $37/mo. I was told by my agent that they also don't care what kind of bike it is, they only look at the CC's of the bike to determine the rate. I am looking at getting GSXR600, (keeping the GS), and full coverage on that for me is only $40.00/mo.
33yrs, no violations
A lot of people recommend State Farm. Be careful with a new quoted price. Some places will give a good rate for the first period then jack up the rates. Never really heard anything decent about Geico or Progressive.
I am with Allstate but have been with for almost 20 years. My policies include home, auto, & motorcycle. Not sure if they write new policies for sport bikes anymore.
My insurance is through Markel.
I'm 25, female and have had no traffic violations, first time biker.
I believe my rate is around $300 a year. I didn't think about the accessory like Hairball did, so I just took my quote from online. It has a 500 ded. Markel was by fair the best rate I got. My Mom's husband has them and has had them for years and their rates drop the longer you have them.
Additonal note, I added my brother to the bike he is also 25 and has been in an accident. I thought he would change my rate, but I guess they do it based on age because it didn't cost me anything to add him.
I got a very good price from a compay called Dairyland.
Geico
47 yrs young
Full coverage including uninsured/underinsured
$250 deductible
$240/yr 8)
hahahah... My friend just got a literbike quote today. He has a R6, for 30 a month, and now, is paying 40 a month, for a Liter bike (Yamaha R1.) State Farm as well. I am yet to see someone give cheaper insurance than them now.. I think though, if you don't have a policy w/ them w/ your car, it's like around 150 or something
My insurance with my maxim is 180 dollars a year with bikeline. It has all the bells and wistles too!
I have mine through State Farm.
22 years old, no accidents or tickets.
Full coverage
$250 deductible
$23 a month
VTNewb,
How did you get such a low rate? Though I don't think 300 is bad, 180 is much better, what ded do you have on it?
He's probably an old fart like me :) I pay progressive 161 a year for my '01. Thats lia. only with 500 deductable and me being 30, married, clean record.
I'm an insuance agent for a company that doesn't handle motorcycles... If you want to find out more about a company check with A.M. Best... They have several ways to rate insurance companies...

I have a pretty good deal through State Farm...

Awesome, good to see some of you are with Bikeline. I had thought I'd get a similarly low rate w/ GEICO since my parents already pay $300 a month for our family (5 drivers, 5 cars), but the bike would add a lot to that.
You folks with the low rates: I assume you all insure your car(s) through the same company. That right?
My buddy uses Markel (bikeline) and he is very happy with their rates.
Nope, I'm 18. I had 500 dollar deductable and had 50,000 personal injury I think. It's just a bike from 85.
I signed up for that AM Best site and they seemed to rate Markel / Bikeline quite well. I'm impressed. And damn I got a good quote. 22 YO, first bike, MSF, comp/collision/towing/etc.. 250 deductibles... 261 a year. :)
I guess I know who I'm getting my next policy through. :)
It especially helps that, after this past christmas, I have an almost perfectly clean record. :) I havent been pulled over in almost 4 years. I just have a 2 year old red-light-camera citation. :x :x :x :x Torrential downpour, very dark, lost in a deserted, unfamiliar part of the city, trying to find a street sign to figure out where the hell I was, and I wandered into a red intersection at about 15 mph. Oops. Cost me almost 500 bucks. :x :x :x :x
im 21... i got 50/25/50 and i got uninsured motorist coverage 50/25... i have a one speeding ticket which was 6 points (102 in 65), one stop sign violation (3 points), and 3 accidents... i only pay $55 a month... i got progressive....
98 GS, 34yo, no tickets since 1987. 50/25/50 and uninsured coverage
$101 per YEAR
Pays to be older some times :)
EDIT:
It is with Progressive, includes collision but not comp.
Damn that's good, but wait, does it include comp and collision and what's the deductible? who's the carrier?
BTW: A buddy's car got side-swiped while parked (hit and run). He's got uninsured motorist coverage, but his carrier (State Farm I think) said they wouldn't pay 'cuz "how do they know if the other car was insured or not?" He's fighting it, but is that ridiculous or what?
Any advice to pass on is appreciated.
I'm 20, 1 at-fault car accident, no tickets, been riding six months, State Farm, liability only, $40/month. When I started it was $80/month and then it magically got cut in half after 3 months. I called to ask them why my bill said $40 (thought it was an extra charge) and they explained that it was my new premium but they couldn't tell me why.
I thought about a lower-priced insurance (similar to the one you mentioned) with a MUCH lower annual rate, but friends recommended me against it because they are more difficult to work with if you ever have to file a claim. Hope that never happens, but just in case...

2001 gs500, 45 years old, full coverage including uninsured less than
300 a year, too cold outside to get the card.
