Title: Stoplight Trigger
Post by: Triton on January 10, 2005, 03:31:03 PM
Has anyone ever experimented with one of these?

If so, how are the results?

i guess no one really knows...i don't think anyone is stupid enough to pay $10-20 for a strip of magnet.

plus, how many time do you get stuck at a light all by yourself on a bike? it has happen once or twice but i don't even know if that becasue my bike didn't trigger the light...

hmmm...doesn't gs have enough metal to begin with?  :dunno:

I asked about them at my local Suzuky dealer and they said if I bought one and it didn't work they would refund my money.  I havn't bought one but havn't noticed waiting an unreasonable amount of time for stoplights either.   :dunno:

i work at a motorcycle shop and bought one for about $9 (dealer cost) to see if it would work.  i've gotten mixed results.  some major highway intersections taht would never have tripped seem to work.  other timed intersections or really old school lights dont seem to be affected.

yes it is just a small magnet, but it seems  to have been worth the $9 i spent on it just for the 3 times it has tripped a light in the middle of nowhere (Where there are cameras so running th elight = bad).

the one i got was called the "signal sorceror" from western power sports.  give it a shot, whats $10 anyway  :dunno:

From a previous post by raindrift:

"I found this really awesome article a while ago that explains how the sensors work and where to sit on the different kinds to activate them properly. It's for bicyclists, but it still applies:

http://www.humantransport.org/bicycledriving/library/signals/green.htm

There's a link at the bottom to a really nice paper that explains how the sensors work in great detail."

There are three lights I hit regularly near work that do not change for any of my bikes, no matter how I move them around, put down the kickstand, whatever.  However, the motorcycle school guy told us that a stoplight that is malfunctioning is to be treated as a four-way stop, and that a light that can't detect a bike is not functioning properly, and that I therefore should not feel guilty when I wait for a cycle of the lights and then run it.  If I get pulled over, I'll let you know how it goes.   :P

I ride with steel-toed boots. I wonder if I could magnetize those, then wave my boots over the sensor? :dunno:

Bonus would be erasing people's credit cards while kicking them in the wallet!

It's worth a try.  You may have to do a little tap dance on the wires to make it work.  I'd like to see that.

I would try it if ten bucks was something I would not miss....but it sounds kinda cheesy to me. I just run the light if it does not change. :nana:

I get stuck at lights ALL THE TIME. At night when no cars were around, I've sat there for five minutes without a light change. I just run it when that happens.

The real problem is when there's traffic and I'm trying to make a left turn in the turn lane, and no one's behind me. I've sat through three cycles before until a car pulled up behind me to activate the left turn. I'm seriously considering spending 20 bucks on one of these.

However, I'm thinking about going up to the hardware store and trying a strong magnet first, since that would only be a few dollars.

This is a real problem for me, because about 90% of the lights around here are sensor activated.

instead of running the light, i make a right then a u-turn...once the light skip your turn once, there's no point in waiting.

Have you tried placing your wheels on the parallel wires?  That is the most effective way.   :thumb:

Most of the lights around here have those passive/visual infra-red detectors so I'll not be bothering with a magnet. Possible an infra-red headlight ? naaaaaaar
