Title: Hey Guys, got some start up problems with the ol gs500.
Post by: notoriouskeef on January 17, 2005, 05:19:13 PM
Hey,  Havn't been here in a while, been on deployment, been trading/buying bikes etc...

Anyway, it's really cold here, havn't ridden the gs in about 2 months.  She was in the garage and I have a buddy that is interested in buying it so I figure I need to keep it running and carbs clean etc...(which i woudl have done anyway).  THe problem is, the choke is stuck, I can't choke it at all.  She sounded like she really wanted to start but would just backfire a bunch.

Is it b/c it's cold or is there anything else I can try, or wait till warmer weather and take the carbs out?

Thanks,
Matt

I got the choke working again but it's still backfiring during cranking and it won't start.  Just backfires occasionally.

Any ideas?

THanks,
Matt

sounds real similar to something that happened to me.  I either got a hold of some bad gas, left it sitting too long, or got some dirt in the tank.  Regardless, I had some problems with the choke and idle, either WAY too high or WAY too low.  The engine would stall a little, then backfire anytime I increased the throttle less than slowly.  Anyway that and having the head gasket replaced cost me about $700  :o .  A cheap "fix?" might be to drain your tank, ( which is real easy, but can be messy) then refill it with clean gas and carb cleaner.  Well good luck.
