i have had my GS500E twin for a few months now !! i bought it as a restor project because it was in very bad condition wen i bought it ! i have now got it bk to its origanal condition and it looks imaculate !! !!
Now the bike is road legle and has full MOT and TAX i took it out for the first time today !! i was feeling good cruising along the motorway ! then i felt like speeding up a bit to go round sum cars !! did it no problem didnt really need to open throttle much !! its just went !! so that was that !!! i was happy with myself and the bike !! then on the way bk down the motorway i was pulling out of a services (i needed sum coffee) i decided to open it right up !! so i was tearin up the road in first gear doin about 40mph !! went to change up to second and i missed it ! ( i havnt bin on a bike in a loooong time) !! so it stayed in first gear but carried on speeding up !! just befor i went to attemp at changing to second again i looked at the speedo and i was at 60+ and still pickin up speed !! i was amazed !!! i carried on up the gears ! got to 130mph and stuck there for a bit tearin it down the outside lane !! !! then i returned home and came on here and was so exited i decided to write my experiance up on here !! :) im well pleased qith the bike !! AMAZING !! i know theres alot of new bikes that can do 60 in first gear but this is a 92' !! i just didnt expect it to be that rapid !!
Wow i wonder if anyone is achually goin to read alllllll that !! ohhhh well !! im to happy !! [/list]
The GS has a surprising amount of zip for a 'small displacement' bike.
I think you've used your allotment of exclamation points for the week, by the way.

what kind of front tire does your gs have? what gearing?
i think 50 is about the most you can go in 1st on stock gearing
You would have been at like 17 grand if you were doin 60 in first, Your little GS should be dead right now
Perhaps he meant to say 60 Kph (about 40 mph)? I know that's achievable in 1st gear.
And since 130 kph is about 80mph, that's easily managed as well.
Clarification, Slash? :dunno:
You're a sceptical lot.
But there's only one way to find out the truth - one of us has got to try it! OK, any volunteers? ;)
Tally ho
My 04 does about 40mph in first gear, maybe 45 if you run it up really high. But I think the speedos are more accurate on the 04s, or so I hear.
I'll try it out later this afternoon when I go to pick up my date. Oh yeah.

you know she's just dating you for your hot bike, don't ya?
60mph in first gear? Wow
My GS... 60mph in fifth gear yeah yeah my bike is very sensitive
*Lil Brat*
Slashexe does actualy refer to 40MPH at one point. He also refers to MOT and Motorways so I would guess that Slashexe is a Brit.(therefore not likely to think in KPH) He does say he don't believe it, fair enough nor do I, perhaps a dodgy speedo or eyesight. On the other hand perhaps we are all doin' it wrong.
i am a brit , and im not refferin to KPH!! yes i do hav dodgy eye site (not seriously tho) but im pretty sure it said 60mph ! but then u said about dodgy speedo now thats summin maybe i should look into!! the speedo origanly didnt wrk for a few months then i did summin (still aint figgured out wot) and it started to wrk again so maybe it is dodgy !
I think my z1000 goes about 70 in first gear.
Hmmm. Dodgy speedo? Have you ever disassembled the instrument? There are several threads regarding getting inside it. The only way I can imagine that an eddy current linked meter (the kind in the "old" style GS) would read high would be with either mechanical contact of the disc magnet with the needle bell OR reduced "anti-spin" of the needle bell itself.
Sounds a little Star Trek like eh? Here's a grab of a long searched internet source. The speedo and the tach work on the same principle. It explains the operation.
In our case the "rotational device" is the front wheel, the "permanent magnet" is a disc, the "cup" is shaped like a bell with the magnet meshed at an angle and not in the same plane as this drawing.
Physical contact of the magnet with the cup would give a false reading. A reduced torsion in the spring would also give a false reading. The GS has some "goop" around the needle shaft that seems to also dampen the movement and add to the torsion of the system.
Of course if a mistake were made in the restoration and incorrect gearing occurred for the output shaft drive...or maybe a HUGE front wheel? On the other hand, you may just have a badass GS and we should all get you to do our engine work.
Of course an over-reading speedo would be a great selling point.
I bet he mistook 2nd gear for 1st gear :P
poor, poor guy
yet none a better place to brag about something the bike can't do than a message board where 99% of its members ride that perticular bike
The 04-05 R1 redlines in first @99mph.....
Must have been is second gear...it's good for 60 at redline. First gear is out of gas at 45 around 11.000 RPM. Just not possible. As for 130 on a GS...there's only one GS that can do a true 130 that I know of and that's Bob's which puts out at least 20 extra ponies. I've had an indicated 130 while drafting a Porsche and that was really around 122-125 and I have at least 45 HP at the rear wheel.

And acctually, unless the speedo difference differs from year to year or that you have different gearing than stock, its 10% off. I had mine clocked by a laser police radar (curtosy of my old man ;) ) At 100km/h he clocked me at 88km/h and 90km/h on two seperate runs... so give or take maybe reading error on my part before signaling him to lock the speed... so make it around 10-11% off... so faster you go, more its off... in other words if your speedo says 130mph, you are probably only going like 117mph.
Also stock gearing on the GS will not allow it to go much faster than 125-130 mph regardless of power... at stock power I have yet to have hit the revlimiter on 6th and neither does anyone I know.. so im just guessing how fast the bike would be going at the limiter.
As for the R1 doing 99mph on 1st.. yeah thats just because the litre bikes are geared so tall in first but close together thereafter... the ZX10 will do even more, but when looking at it on a dyno (which is done in third gear) it will be at 153mph when it hits the revlimiter... so around 100mph on first, two gears later its only 50mph or so faster.

Unless they added a limiter to the F models, there GS 500 has no limiter.
I mean the revlimiter on 6th... im not sure if it has one on 6th gear but i've hit it in fifth.
Not aware of any gearing changes on the GSs over the years. Here is the theoretical speed at redline from the first Cycle mag test in 89. About 140 mph in 6th at redline.
Gear: Ratio: Theo top @ 11K rpm redline:
1st 2.461 (32/13) 48 mph
2nd 1.777 (32/18) 67
3rd 1.380 (29/21) 86
4th 1.125 (27/24) 106
5th .961 (25/26) 124
6th .851 (23/27) 140
Primary reduction: 2.714 (76/28)
Final reduction: 2.437 (39/16) 110 link 520 chain
LOL, the 8 followed by a ) got replaced by a smiley in 2 different places?
The gears are long enough to do it, but the motor doesn't have the power to overcome the drag at that speed. BTW, the older bikes (02 and lower) don't have a TPS or the same ignition as the newer bikes...so no rev limiter in any gear. I didn't even know the F models have em.
