Title: Fork oil leaking over brake pads
Post by: LEVO on January 20, 2005, 07:31:36 PM
This seal shouldn't be leaking at 1700 miles does it!  Yeah it does...  To make things worse it leaks straight into the brake pad.  I guess it is not good to drive with brake pads soaked with fork oil.

About a month ago put new progressive springs and new brake pads as well.  I hated that nasty fork oil.  Now I have to play with it again. I wonder if the seals are covered under the extended warranty, should check before going at it...

Wonder what else is going to leak or fail next. :x

Mine went at about 3000 miles (maybe before).  They are crap!  Are you past your 1 year warranty?  Glad to hear you put in progressives - money well spent.  I have had very few other problems with the bike (that were not self imposed).  The battery started leaking this year but it is now 5 years old.

You have an '02, so you have the little fork protectors...well, ziptie a sock around the forkleg to keep the fluid from runnin' down the leg onto you brakepads until you can fix it proper. Also, replace both sides; usually when one side goes the other is soon to follow.

Did you make sure to use a little sandwich bag over the top of the tube, lubed with fork oil, when you slid the new seals on?

I haven't fixed the seals yet.  I will talk to the dealer and see if it is covered under extended warranty.  Tying a rag around the dust cover sounds like a good idea in the meanwhile.

Mine right seal failed rather dramatically and I lost a lot of oil right onto the disc. I was at 6,000 miles but I have a '98 that I rescued from a bad home. I still don't have full stopping power back after a couple of weeks of riding.

Your mileage seems awfully premature. The dealer will probably lay the blame on you, since you did the fork work.
