Title: Vibrations...
Post by: addison on February 01, 2005, 08:03:33 AM
Whats up all?

I have an '04 500F and within the past month I have noticed a strange vibration while riding. I don't get the noise like others have complained about on the '04's but I do feel this vibration on the right side of the gas tank that slowly moves to the left side then goes away for a minute, then it starts again on the right side and moves to the left. It's wierd, it just cycles through.

I just hit 5k on it and have done all the routine maintenance except for the valve adjustment after 4k, I had the dealer do it after the break in period but haven't done it since. Could this be the issue?

The bike runs fine I just thought it was a strange occurance.

I remember when I first noticed the same kind of "vibration cycle" on my '99.  At that point I had ridden the bike for 5 months and 4000 miles.  I was miles from anywhere and I got worried.  I listened to & felt & thought about the "wave" for a good while as I panicked on down the road.

In the end I reasoned that it must result from a slight difference in the vibrational frequencies between different parts of the bike.  It's like when my wife and I play the same note on our recorders, but the frequencies are oh-so-slightly different.  We hear a third "note" being played by ... "the little man" we call him.  (It's really strange to hear him play his own teeth-grating tune along with ours.  Anyway....)

I'll wager that whenever you increase (or decrease) your  RPMs the "vibrational wave" will go away.  For me it consistently appeared at the same RPM range.  Why did it take me so long to notice it?  There are a couple of possibilities:welcome "the wave".  It lets me know that all is right with the world.  If I'm cruising along on my bike with few enough distractions that I can notice those vibrations, how much better can life get?   :thumb:

Hmmm ... sorry for any innuendo that can be read into my post.  It wasn't intended.  :nono:  I just meant that if I'm out in the middle of nowhere on my bike, that means I'm on a long ride and I couldn't ask for more....

So you're a fellow recorder player, Kerry. Are you an ARS member?

I was at a workshop where our instructor was discussing 'difference tones'. I think she said that if two recorders play in thirds then the difference tone is the fifth of the chord and two octaves below. It's really obvious with 2 soprano recorders, makes that low buzz.

Anyway, its too bad we live so far apart, my wife and I are desperate to find two more players to fill out a quartet.

How strange...I too own a GS500 and play the recorder.  Maybe it is the vibration or harmoics that draws us all together on this little space of waving cathode rays.....my kids roll their eyes whenever it is revealed that they have a dad who rides an almost crotch rocket and toots ancient toons on a long piece of wood...oops no innuendo intended.

Oops - I just knew somebody was gonna call me on that.  I wouldn't say that I am a recorder player - just that once every few years my wife and I get out the little plastic recorders we have and toot for an hour so.  And it takes me most of that time to stop goofing up royal.  I kinda taught myself from a book my wife had - shortly after we got married 19 years ago.  I'm nowhere close to being a good or even a decent player.  :(

Kudos to you folks who really CAN play an instrument!  :thumb:

I have a GS500, but I don't play a recorder.  Am I out of sync with this crowd?  :dunno:

Humm.  Back to the original topic?  At what RPM or speed does the "vibration" show? The bike is known to buzz between 4800 - 6000 RPM, so I suspect this isn't what we're talking about here?

Just satisfying my paranoia here.  I'm wondering if there's something else I have to start worrying about.   :(
