OK Topic says it all ... but more details ...
These are sold by unlimited toolz or some other ebay store ... they cost like $8 for 1 set and $15 for a 2 pack SAE and metric ... and its 15 in shipping
Worthless ... The taps may be OK but the dies are useless ... they have very poor to no starting taper ... the taps have way too much machining burr but otherwise may be ok ... I haven't even used them and I want to throw it in the trash ... Chineese shaZam! ... man cant they make tools a bit better ... LIke I said if this shaZam! goes up 10-20% in price their tools atleast will be un saleable ...

On the dies you can grind a taper into them with a dremel.
Oh well lets see if it even withstands my first thread cleaning job ... might not be worth the trouble ...

Thx for reminding me ... the part I have to tap is the cam tower on the 89 ... freaking hell I better know how strong it is ... Also no drill sizes on the damn tap ... I might have to buy a good US made tap just for that ...

Oh Gawd! Don't buy that crap. :nono: Order some real taps and dies (Union Butterfield or Irwin). A set costs about $1,200 so just buy the sizes you need as you need them. In Aluminum they'll last next to forever. :thumb:
Oh yeah... If you ever break one off call a machine shop supply and get a broken tap remover and a few spare fingers for it. We have all kinds of little tricks and cool tools. 8)

Anyway my welder recomended them ... Turns out Harbor freight in my town has these for $13.50 and tax .... so I made out OK on the cost, anyway he says they work OK for aluminum and I am doing aluminum mostly ... I probably will not outright tap steel ... and definetly I aint cutting threads in those stainless rods I was doing before ... so May be OK ...

Good thing about tapping aluminium is that you can make your own taps if you're in a pinch. Take a steel screw or bolt, put it in a vice, and run 2 or three slits across the threads with a dremel cutoff wheel. Make the slits pretty deep if you're tapping into thick material. Then make the end into a point on a grinder. :thumb:

Well, maybe you will need them to fix where you have used SAE fine thread bolts in carbs that were made to take Metric???? :dunno:

Taps and dies are like all tools, you get what you pay for. Rather than spend the money on a full set of cheap ones, and lets face it you wont use the majority of the sizes included. Its better to spend the money on good quality items in the few sizes you will use. Its like buying a massive socket set, why bother? you will never use most of them. Just buy the sizes you need when you need them.

That's just great ... The Machine thread bolts are built to better tolerances than the Metric ... and in effect fit and worked better ... Yea the machine thread was smaller than the ideal size from what I saw on McmasterCarr but guess what ... the steel metric bolt was even smaller, had more thread defects and more than 1 in 2 were atleast slightly bent. The SS Machine thread bolts were better quality ... no forcing was needed ... If I was to use metric maybe I'd have had to force somehting ... The taps ... ebtirely different story ... I didn't look at it in a store and buy. I saw it on ebay and hoped it will be better ... Read the posts I made then or better yet run down to the hardware store and buy the bolts and measure them. Then You'll know. The SS bolts cost 2 X the steel ... and are built to more exact specs. The steel metric stuff is worse than the SS machine in metric bolt holes. I am not putting the cheaper shaZam! that doesn't fit, I am putting in more pricey stuff that fits better. Yes I heard you idea of buying bolts from Mcmastercarr ... but I am not going to buy a pack of 100 bolts when I need 4 or 8. I am also not discussing this with you any further.
