Title: decisions decisions...
Post by: Meighan on February 07, 2005, 12:23:04 PM
Ok, so I'm torn...

I have to decide between a 2000 TLR 1000 or a 1999 GSXR 600... both are race ready (the gixxer comes with yellow street plastics as well as black race ones), but have clean titles so I can insure them for the street. Both have a good history (my mechanic found them for me, and I trust him), and get this, both are the same price.

What should I do???

I like gixxers, but I'm not so fond of SRADs... I wanted a 600 class bike, but the tiller is such a good deal...

I'm leaning towards the tiller because of the classes I would get to race in, and because apparently it's easier to ride, what do you guys think??

Sorry, I know this isn't GS500 related in any way other than I used to have a GS500, but you guys are my buddies, give me some advice ;)

Here's the bikes:

Go for the TLR if it makes you eligible for more classes.  More classes = more fun.  :thumb:

As a Steelers fan, I vote for the gixxer!

There isnt a nicer [bad-ass] sounding twin as the tiller. Unfortunately it looks like a bloated gixxer in those colors.

Check the insurance on both. but all things being equal I'd go for the gixxer 6. Less classes to race in but more fun on the track. Lighter too.

Tiller all the way ... cant stand that inline 4 ... besides a A tiller will wipe the floor with a 600 GSXR ... a 750  is what its almost equal to ...
Cool.

Does his TL still have a single sided exhaust? (mike_r on TLPlanet.com) Looks like a stock can though.

I have ridden both, the same years actually. They ride completely different.

The TL is more forgiving. Slow tight tracks are tougher since it is a little heavier. Touchy throttle, but most big twins have this issue. Just need good throttle control. Expect to replace the rear tire often. Fuel injected.

The older 600's need to rev'd like hell to get any power out of them. Carburated.

You already know what I would recommend.

The Tiller is more streetable. Whichever one is more comfortable is the one I'd ride on the street. If you're just racing, either one.

Hey D :)

This is what the TLR comes with:

Sharkskinz Carbon/Kevlar kit bodywork
Carbon fiber ram air tubes,
Showa rear shock with Hypercoil spring,
Harris adjustable steering damper,
ProTek Rearsets
2 into 1 exhaust with K3 GSXR1000 Titanium pipe,
Crankcase breather mod
SS brake lines,

And comes with a ton of spares such as,

airbox,
upper radiator,
radiator fan,
subframe,
minty stock pipes (works with the 2 into 1 system),
wire harness,
throttle bodies,
15/16 tooth front sprockets,
41/46 tooth rear sprockets,
front axle and spacers,
swingarm pivot axles,
hermit dragon ram air tubes,
various sensors for the fuel injection system,
stock rearsets,
2 rotary dampers,
2 stock spring units,
triple clamp,
box of factory suzuki nuts/bolts,

For tires, it comes with a set of Pirelli Supercorsa's (4 track days on them), a set of Michelins H2's (3 race days) and 1 Michelin H2 rear tire (1 race day)

In contrast the gixxer comes with nothing, it's stock, save for the spare plastics. The guy's taking out all the goodies when he sells it, shock, damper, etc.

It has been awhile....

Nice list of spares.

A little suprised it still has the stock rear shock but does have a better spring. There are several good options available if you want to upgrade shocks.

The SS exhaust will increase the low/midrange power but may lose a little off the top.

Since you will probably put it on the street, make sure the headlight plugs are still there and the wiring harness has not been altered. At least the spare harness should have the upper part for headlight connections. Some kind of headlights would need to be adapted since the Sharkskins do not have provisions for the head light.

Stock or aftermarket fairing stay?

I think you would be happier with the TL.

I am working on CF parts from the stock body work on my TLR. I would love to get hold of some race glass to pull a mold.  ;)

It has the wiring harness, and the guy says I can get a headlight to clip on under the front, same with a break light, and he has turn signals he'll give me. I'll need it for street and track right now, since I'm broke-ass and can't afford 2 bikes.

It's got the stock fairing stay.

Yeah I think I'll be happy with the TL!

Ohh you're playing around with CF??

I took over all of JamesG's production of carbon body work. He was deployed overseas for about 1.5 years. At least I will get the lower for my GS now.
Also, I bought all of his GS parts and stuff.

I'm a fan of V-Twins personally. More torque, way way way better sound.

the 99 era GSXR's had can chain tensioner issues.  As much as I like the GSXR600's I'd look for 2001 or newer.

The TL is a beast.  If you think you can handle it then go for it  :)

um.... the snapped off valve stems on the 01-03 gsxr600s is worse than a cam chain tensioner

if you are going to the track....consider crashability...and ease of replacement parts
old SRAD parts are getting cheaper
we sold our old 1997 endurance bike with a ton of spares for 3500 4 years ago

neither bike will win a race...just too dang old...already.....

i like the 600 better but....oppinions are like....

Come on isn't that a bit harsh ...
If every one else in that race was me ... wont it be easy to win with a TL ...
besides ... I think all the guys will let her get in front just to enjoy the view ...  So I'm saying race like a GS or some older and cheaper ... Might as well ...

About crash spares....Eventhough the TL is not made any more, oem and aftermarket parts are still plentiful. There are a lot of parts from GSXR's that bolt directly or with minor mods on to the TL such as: rearsets, front ends, wheels, calipers, fairings, clip-ons, hand controls, instrument clusters, just to name a few. There are even private ventures for other parts such as bodywork and frames.
