Anybody know what kind of gas mileage does the gs get?
mine gets 60-65MPG
Mines usually total miles traveled on that tank of gas divided by how many gallons I put in. :mrgreen: There is a search feature, it does wonders.

50 - 56mpg, but my gallon is 20% bigger than as US Gallon, somewhere about 11 or 12 miles to the litre but I do lot of short hops and in-town riding, average goes well over 60 if I'm on the open road.
My '94 w/ 28k miles only gets 40-45mpg. It's been rejetted to 150/40/1 to compensate for the lunchbox and pipe though..

Typically, to figure out your individual gas mileage (the way your bike burns gas, the way you ride, etc.), fill up your tank and zero the tripmeter, then figure 45 miles per gallon on a 4.5 gallon tank, minus reserve (.8gal; set your fuel selector to ON), you should get 165 miles before your next fillup. Fill it up, do the math, and there's your gas mileage (adjust for riding conditions). However, a few of us only get 125 miles out of a tank, so to be careful fill up then and you can still do the math.
What scratch said, with the added note....
make sure you fill it the same way both times. If you go just to the neck and stop, then do it that way both times.
If you fill it like some of us (over the neck bottom, watch it bubble down, repeat til no more bubbles) do it that way both times.
Mixing the two methods will skew your numbers pretty badly.
Around 50 mpg and I flog that puppy.
Mid-50's in urban use, and mid-60's for rural touring. (My highest per tank was 69 mph, two lane rural roads, steady 50-60 mph. :thumb: )
In spring & fall I see urban consumption rise forced by increased idle time to reach operating temperature. If I do highway speeds (70-80 mph), I get around 60 MPG as wind resistance takes its toll.

My 2001 withe 7500 miles is getting steady 75 mpg. I have twice run up to 300 miles on the trip meter and still have not had to use the reserve. I ride like a little old lady except when in traffic, then I work my way into the safest places by whatever means possible.
the worst I ever got was about 35 mpg, but my exaust valves were not closing all the way due to a shim problem, and a dirty air filter. but I was shooting flames that whould tickle the rear tire. it was really cool.

It sounds like the stop & go is what's killing your mileage.
You can fill it beyond the filler neck (I have to go find Kerry's post on how much more you can fill beyond the bottom of the neck). But, I'm guessing you had 96 miles and 106.6 miles on the tripmeter when you filled up each time, respectively.
Edit: no can find Kerry's post on how much more he was able to pump in there beyond the filler neck.
Lately I've been getting 35. Could have something to do with the 15t, stage 2, and ignition advancer. More likely because I've only been riding in the twisties, using 2nd and 3rd gears only.
Hey guys.....my first post. I just bought an '04 GS about three weeks ago. I do highway and city driving. I currently have 300 miles on it and did the math for my MPG and it comes out to 33mpg. How is this possible??? I filled the tank.....drove 150 miles and had to switch to reserve. How long can I go on reserve????? maybe this is the calculating that is messing me up. Anyways....please let me know. Thanks

The parameters -
To what level did you fill the tank? I'm guessing you filled it up to the filler neck, that's ok.
Did you fill it up after switching to reserve? And, if so, how many gallons did it take, or to what level (to the filler neck?)?
According to your numbers you filled up the tank completely with 4.5 gallons after you drove 150 miles. Is this true?
Again, divide the number of miles on the tripmeter (from when it was full) by the number of gallons (including tenths) to get your mileage.
Example: Last time (or the first time) I filled up to the filler neck, I zeroed my tripmeter, I drove 134 miles before I filled up again, when I filled up at that time I noted that it took 2.2 (always round up) gallons to fill to the filler neck again. 134 divided by 2.2 = 60.9 miles per gallon.
Also, your bike is still being broken in so it may use more gas in the process. Don't worry about it until after your initial 600 mile break-in.

If you bought the bike new..... it needs to break in... i hope you are following break in procedure, in another 300 miles, service it according to the manual and your performance and mileage will increase dramaticaly

You hit reserve at about 3 gallons, then you have like 1.5 of reserve.

yes thats how far i got both times before i had to switch to reserve. what can i do to inprove my gas milage? :dunno: any advice?
p.s. my bike has 33k miles on it
I got 47.5 and 47.9 on my first two calculations.
24,500 miles and no mods on this bike.

Maintain a steady throttle position, don't gas it when going uphill, get up to speed before you get to the hill. Go slow enough to maintain a steady throttle (not always the best idea, but I find that the people who go around me trip the light for me so when I get there I just cruise on through...).
Commuting and around town playing, I just got about 75 mpg and it was cold on many of those trips.
I have not modded the bike, but I don't know what the original owner did.

and
averaged eleven calculations reported by individuals on this forum = about 51 mpg.

i will have to do the calculations when i get another tank full. but the question that i have is that i have an 04 gs500 and i was wondering what octane i should run in ive been running 89 in it but tonight i forgot and but 87 in it is that going to hurt it. if so which octane should i use.
