So I dropped my bike for the first time today taking it off the centerstand after checking the oil. I guess I didn't notice but where I put the bike up there was a little slant in the driveway, and when I pushed the bike off the stand the handlebars turned to the right (with me on the left) and over it went. I managed to slow its descent, at the expense of my back and my arms! However, the most embarrasing part is that I couldn't even get it back up! I think I had somewhat of an excuse because I hurt my back dropping it, but still! I had to wait for my girlfriend to come home from work so she could help me lift it back up. Anyway, just scratched the exhaust pipe and the valve cover a little bit, nothing too major. I even manged to make sure that it fell on the bar end instead fo the brake lever so I didn't break that. Anyhow, I guess it's good that the first drop was at 0 MPH and not going around a corner or something! What can you do? :dunno:
well the other day my bike saw the ground for the second time during my ownership. first time i was going 2mph and turned to sharp. no damage at all. second time my mom taped it over w/ her car. i flipped out. the bars were locked and it fell on its right side causing the instrument assembly to hit the tank and put a dent in it. grr i was mad :x
My girlfriend was down the block and sat down on my bike, then I looked over at her and she looked over at me, smiling, and pretending to ride it....then it just fell over on top of her.

I bet your legs are longer than mine :) , I have decided it is less precarious for me to be off the bike to push off the stand. But I only use it in my garage.
You could always ride it off the stand  Rev it up to get some wheel speed then lean back to put the rear wheel on the ground.
Vroom, off you go

haha...only if you're 6'+
I'm 5'6" and have no problem sitting on the bike to take it off the stand...perhaps the previous owner did something that I don't know about to the suspension...
If your 6ft+ then your probably strong enough to get the bike on and off the centre stand no problems anyway.
nathanael:
You say the handlebars turned as you took the bike off the stand.
Weren't you holding them?
When I take the bike off the centre stand I have my left hand on the left bar, my right hand on the grab rail and my right foot with the toes just resting over the foot plate of the centre stand.
I lean towards the front of the bike with my weight on my left leg and pull forwards and slightly up on the grab rail.
Next i hold the bike in place with a little pressure on the foot plate
and move my right hand onto the right handle bar to put the front brake on.
Finally I lift my right foot to gently allow the centre stand to come fully up.
OK, perhaps you could simplify that but I bring my bike out onto a slight slope.
If I don't keep a little pressure on the foot plate until I have the front brake on, tehn the bike tries to roll off down the hill.
Also as my bike is a '94, the rubber stoppers for the stand are knackered.
If I let the stand come up unrestricted then it clangs against the frame in a way that doesn't sound too healthy.
Getting the bike onto the stand is pretty much the reverse of this except I put my right hand onto the subframe just infront of the left passenger foot peg and push down on the foot plate to get the bike up onto the stand.
i always put the kickstand down before i lower it from centerstand...
i just plant both feet on the ground and push.. lol
Quote from: Frosti always put the kickstand down before i lower it from centerstand...
what's the point of doing that? :dunno: wouldn't the side stand hit the gound?
i would start the bike on the center stand, give a full throttle, and take off! :thumb:
seriously, just slightly pull it towards you as you push it off the centerstand. that way, if it does fall over, your ass can cushion the fall. one time, i had gotten on my bike and took off...then realized that i had forgotten something so i turned around and parked the bike but totally forgot to lower the kickstand (i was in a hurry). well, as i got off the bike, i realize that the bike was leaning more and more. then it finally dawned on me that the kickdestand weren't down so i quickly threw myself inbetween the bike and the ground! i was in a huge pain but my bike never hit the ground :thumb:
so next time, go ahead, sacrificing your body for your bike!

well...that's what i did when i was a newbie at it...
i'd put kick stand down, stand on right side of bike...and push forward...
if the bike is straight...kickstand will not touch ground...
i'm only 5'7"...so sitting on bike is not an option...
now i just push and go... :thumb:
Be careful doing that - kickstand down I mean. If that stand comes down on yer foot with about 300lbs behind it - you're goin' to the hospital! :o The idea of being on the right side of the bike is an interesting one though to avoid that possibility. Maybe I'll try it  I always have the fear that the bike will just go over on me while taking it off the center stand. Hasn't yet but I did have one scare but I caught it in time. Talk about an adreline rush when that happened - "NO.. WAY.. NOT... GOING... TO... FALL - ahhhh - saved it!" I'm 5'6" - can't touch the bleedin' ground with the center stand down. :dunno:
Ride safe

rock your body back, then hard forwards. I can barely touch... not enough to really push though
The two times I've taken the bike of the center stand I have straddled it. I'm 5'9. Though it did take a bit to get it off, I was barely reaching the ground. The sad part is I still can't get it up on the center stand. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I just make my brother put it up for me. :thumb: Of course he is 6'7 so taking it off the center stand is no problem. :x
1) Put the bike in Neutral.
2) Stand on the left side of the bike.
3) Hold the left grip with your left hand.
4) Hold the rear grab bar with your right hand.
5) Stand on the centerstand lever with your right foot and slowly rock the bike backwards.
To get it off the centerstand, sit on the bike and push forward.
what does your height have to do with getting the bike off the centerstand? :dunno:
just grab the bike and push it off the centerstand like dom has listed above

I'd like to add that I pull UP and back on the handlebars while standing on the centerstand lever
I am 5'5", I always straddle the bike when I take it off the center stand, which is everytime I fill up. The feet don't have to reach the ground. Just sit on the bike, and rock it back and forth a few times and it will go off the center stand. Then just balance it and be ready with the front brake. It is really easy. After a few times, I don't have to rock it back and forth any more--just lean back and one time forward.
Cheers,
e.
I'm 5'7 and I sit on the bike and my feet are flat on the Ground. Then I just rock back then forward. The bike doesn't even move an inch forward when it gets off the center stand either.
I straddle mine, but a previous bike I had was a pain that way (weighed a lot more) so I stood on the right side, right hand on the handlebar/front brake, left hand on the LEFT side grab rail.
I'd then push it forward, but deliberately let it come over to the right a bit, so if were to get unbalanced it would be towards me and thus easier to control.
A bike falling towards you lets you use your leg strenght. one falling away from you is all on your arms and back.
Speaking of which, if you ever do tip it over again, here's a tip.
If it fell on it's right side, put the kickstand out (yes, sticking in the air) face away from the bike, plant your feet close to the seat, reach behind you and grab the handlebar and grab rail. lift with your legs. It will come up quite easily and since you already have the stand out, you can just let it fall over onto it.
If it's on it's left side, you can't pre-set the kickstand, but since your feet are right there, just lift a little more carefully, and once it's almost upright, use one of your feet to swing out the kickstand.
I've lifted some really heavy bikes this way, and I'm only 5'10" 150lb

Haha, yeah I was holding the handlebars. Granted, I may not be the smartest person out there but I'm not that dumb!
Somehow it managed to get away from me anyway though. :dunno: Next time I'm definitely sitting on the bike and pushing it off.
