Title: A good investment.....
Post by: juggernaught on February 19, 2005, 09:16:03 PM
Last friday while i was returning some videos i came back to find my bike tipped over.  All in a span of about 5 minutes.  At the scene the owner of the car i was parked behind was standing over the bike and i calmly asked her if she tipped it over backing up.  She said no...that it was on its side already when she backed into it having not seen it.  I was about to not believe her when a guy in a pickup drove up and told me he'd seen a couple of jerkoffs intentionally knock over the bike and then run away.  He quietly follwed them to a house about 3 blocks away and then called the cops.

They were caught.  :nana:  :nana:  :nana:

Unfortunately when the lady backed into the bike she bent the kickstand bracket a bit.  A couple of cops helped me bend it into place till i got it replaced today.  But other than that no damage.  "How can that be ?" you say...???

Well i'll tell ya.....Frame Sliders..!!!!!

Specifically Cycle Cat sliders.  I had  that replaced as well as i've seen how well they work.  I shoulda taken a pic of the crushed one...just kinda compressed absorbing the impact but the bike was without a scratch.

Just wanted to share the experience.  Definitely one of the better investments i've made.

Where did you get the sliders? Do you have 500F model?

My bike was tipped over once. No damage, except for some barely visible scratches on the muffler and bar end. I think somebody sat on it (I lived on a busy campus at that time) and it went down. Probably, the person, who was sitting on, it tried to keep it up but couldn't. I was pissed for a couple of days.

No i sold my GS i have a Monster now but you can get sliders for many model bikes or at least have them adapted.  Some sliders work better than others so do the research.  A site like this can give you some idea

Yeah, I am familiar with that product. There was a discussion about those sliders some time ago on this site and, I think, the conclusion was that they wouldn't do much help if a bike is dropped at any speed and do very marginal help if at all at stand still drop. When my bike was dropped, it did not even touch the fairing. It was sitting on the foot peg, muffler, and bar end.

These sliders extend out pretty far and are well placed. But again that may depend on the bike.  I'll take a few pics when i go out later and post them later this evening.  Gotta see my sweetie and beat the snow on the way back.  ;)

I love to see GS500-specific products, but... in the pictures on that website:

...it looks very similar to what you'd get if you bought a 1.5" cylinder of black nylon at a hobby shop ($2):

...then saw-off two pieces, two inches long each.

...then drill a 1/4" hole all the way through it; then drill a 3/4" hole one inch deep in each, and put a bolt through each.

If you want the outside edges rounded, use a router with 1/4" roundover bit.  Granted, this may not go perfectly without a drill press and router, but  $50 seems a bit much to me.

...especially now that we're spoiled with cheap parts and tools from other members here  :thumb:
