Title: fried EX after JUMP start, HELP?!
Post by: Jasco on February 20, 2005, 07:10:02 AM
One of my friends has an EX500 '93 I think.  He tried starting it, but the battery was too low.  So he tried to hook up one of those car jump start packs, but the clamps would not fit on the battery connections.  So he took the battery out and clamped the hot to the read battery cable and the black to the frame.  Lights came on, but when he tried to start the engine nothing happened and the lights went out.  Now nothing works, but all the fuses are OK.  What did he fry that killed everything.

Thanks

Matt

Just curious.  Maybe the jump-start pack has a fuse or circuit breaker built in?  Or it croaked?  Do you have a multimeter to check voltages, etc. for the pack and the battery?  Of course the usual stuff too, like messing with any sidestand/neutral/kill switches to be sure they are not on the fritz.  If you have a multimeter you can also see if the battery circuit is open, meaning you can check continuity by putting the test leads on the battery cables, and seeing if current flows, with and without the start button pushed.

Hopefully you didn't fry the ignition system, and I doubt you fried the voltage regulator.  But I don't really know what those jump packs pack for voltage.  I doubt they are good for a lot of turns of the starter.  You might try jumping the bike using a car battery, without the car running.  I'm not the best of experts here, but I thought I'd offer all that until one of the gurus can answer.

Good luck.

Well You need the real battery in there..,those little booster deals aren't powerful enough to get that bike going by itself.  Get a charger on the battery or a fresh battery in the bike and try it again.

Do you have a fresh battery in it now and nothing is working?

I think he replaced the battery and now there is nothing.  No lights No start.  Something is blown or fried in the circuitry.  There is no power to anything.

Clean off the battery terminals and connectors with a wire brush and try again.

If that doesn't do it, check for continuity in the positive battery lead.  It's possible you may have blown a fusible link hidden in there somewhere.

94Suzuki500

I ride a Kawasaki.  It's as reliable as any Suzuki I've had.
The problem he has is operator error/owner inflicted.

Jasco- sounds like he may have just killed  the main fuse- double check it. (30 amp- near the starter relay - think it's on the left side on the ex..)

Don't just look at it -use a meter and  maybe just swap it out to be really sure.

I think I have a clymer for an ex500 here somewhere...

Getting mad..... Uhmmm No...

This is the Gstwin Website....yes... The question was about a Kawasaki.

You made a remark about Kawasakis like you had a bad time with them... (and offered no actual help on the subject..)

How Many Kawasakis Have you owned anyway? What specific problems did you have with yours?
I've owned a ZX11 (94) Since new and aside from regular maintenance and the side stand bolts starting to come loose- have had no issues with it. I Had a vulcan 500 that ran like a champ.. ...Also had a ZN1100 LTD (an 85) .. Ran great...and all the electronics worked perfectly on it (19 year old bike)  That bike had LOTS of bells andd whistles including auto cancelling turn signals. Everything worked.
Oh yeah...I have also owned over  a half dozen Gs's.... and have had to do more work on them than any of  the Kawasakis...

So what problems did you have with your Kawasaki? Or is that Gs your first and only bike you have owned? (obviously making you a Kawasaki expert...).

Now don't get mad at that last part... just making a Joke.
