Hey,
I've got a problem I need help with. First my bike will only run on "prime" been that way since I bought it 6k ago. (95 model) I recently cranked it, rode it out, and washed it. After I washed it I found that gas was dripping rapidly from the breather tube that comes from the airbox. It wouldn't start. I let her bleed out.
When my husband arrived, we put gas in it and it cranked, would rapid idle to 4k w/choke on but will die eventually. It won't run at all with the choke off.
(Recently it was leaking gas everywhere and had a small hole in one of the fuel lines, the one that feeds the carbs from up between them. We replaced it and I have ridden about 70 miles since then...no problems.)
There is a vaccum type looking tube with a 90 degree bend in it that is right up behind the fuel petcock. WHERE does this one attach??? We have one with a 90 degree bend attached to the right hand side of the petcock and the 2 from the bottom of the tank attached to the left hand side. What are we missing?????
HELP!!!!!!!!! If this thing doesnt run soon....hes going to buy me an SV>> :)
Skidchik
Could someone at least post a pic for the gas line routes?
Patricia/skidchik
ah hell....that's motivation enough.....the best fix is to dump it off on your local stealer and pick up that SV.....
The hose behind the tank-mounted petcock with a 90-degree bend is a drain hose that attaches to a short metal spout that points down from the underside of the tank - almost directly below the gas cap. If you shine a flashlight in your tank you will see a tube that goes from the top of your tank to the bottom. The spout that sticks out is a continuation of that tube.
For more info, see the "Fuel Overflow / Water Drain Hose" on the diagram at the bottom of my Fuel Hose Routing Page (http://www.bbburma.net/FuelHoseRouting.htm).

All hoses are right.....pulling the tank to look at carb floats....... :x

The vacuum tube you mentioned above--is it thinner than the other fuel tubes? If so, and it is unattached from the frame petcock (there is another petcock on the tank that feeds the two fuel hoses coming from the tank), that would explain why you can only run on prime. That thin tube should be attached to the left carb.
Do a search on the forum for routing diagram and you would get some hits. Be warned that the manuals (if you have the Clymer or Haynes) have erroneous fuel hose routing diagrams IIRC. I would do the search but I am pressed for time right now. If you can't find the diagram, I'll find it for you later tonight. But I bet Kerry will find it first. He knows the forum well and he doesn't sleep.
Cheers,

Welcome!

Floats may be too high and on Prime is flooding out the floatbowl drain hose.

Check and adjust the idle screw.
I had a similar problem that ended up being a torn petcock diaghram. The high idle/choke problem may also be a vacuum problem. Check the rubber manifold boots between the head and carbs for cracks and dry rot - particularly underneath where it's hard to see.
You can check these boots for cracks by spraying a little WD-40 on the boots while the motor is running. If it revs higher for a second, you've got a link.
I think we'd be better able to figure this out with a photo of you and your bike. So we can maybe get an idea of the bike's maintenance history. . .
I sure hope you change the petcock to ON after each ride cause if you leave it on PRIme it leaks into the crankcase. Check your oil level. If it's too high then you're in big troubles cause the fuel has run into the crankcase making your oil too thin and this can cause serious damage.
