Greetings to all. Just acquired this 95 with 1600 original miles on it. Got it started found it idles only. Rust in the tank is in the fuel lines bad and all fuel system is badly varnished. When I took the carbs apart to clean I found the float needle on 1 carb has a metal hairpin clip at the top that looks as though it should hook around the top on the float lever, it was under the flap. The other carb is missing this clip altogether and the needle top appears all boogered up as though someone has been at it. I assume this is my problem. Does the metal flap on the float rest on top of or engage the clip? I assume I'll check a dealer for the one bad needle.
I've searched this forum and other web sites on how to proceed with the tank and rust problem and have that pretty well thought out.
This is a sweet bike that an older couple kept garaged and protected well except for the rust in the fuel. If any techies have suggestions for anything else I may need to look at I'm all ears. The previous owner had it worked on for previos throttle problems. Sounds like the only problem here was really lack of use. I will be putting a lot of miles on this bike and want a good repair here. All orings and gaskets in good shape.
I'm really excited about this bike after reading the testimonials throughout this forum.
I am buying a rack of Katana carbs for parts ... lemme know what you need ...
Cool.

$12 for a kit including the new needle: http://www.partsnmore.net/part_cat.php?make=suzuki&category=carb_kits

I put the tab from the float through the square clip at the bottom of the needle. The float needs to be able to push the needle up, but also pull it down (that was my thinking, at least).
Doh.. Rema, I ordered a new valve & seat from the local dealer today. 36.00 for 1 seat, no o rings.... Wish I had seen that link before today. I thought I had looked around enough but apparently not. I also ordered 125 and 40 mains and primaries. Another 20.00.
I assembled & test started as is and found I've got acceleration & after warm up it Is pretty adjustable at idle. The bad thing I saw though was after priming the carbs and setting to run the carbs are dumping out the overflow pretty bad when its running. I'll replace the 1 seat and try again. Saw the neat tip on checking the float levels so I'm gonna try that.
Set the air mix screws at 3 turns. Main needle has 1 washer on it. I'm picking up a few #4 washers from Lowe's to play with.
If anybody has any other suggestions for the oveflow problem that I'm not seeing here please speak up.
This site is great.
Why were you replacing the float and needle ... I've not seen too many of those go bad ... they dont exactly wear at a great rate ... 47K and still using the one that came with it stock ... Also a rebuild kit ... sorta overkill ... If the carbs leak especially at the floats then its worth buying ... else not at all ... The O rings are all auto parts spec ... I picked up a couple for the carbs I am working on ... ~ $3 for 4 ... WTF that's $$$ but still ... better than the $36 or the $12 X 2 ... In any case check here before buying anything ... at the very least you can test it with what someone here might tell you ... and buy just what you need ...
Cool.

Progress report.
Waited all week for the parts to show up at the dealer, what a joke. Got the stuff home yesterday, went straight to the garage and took the carbs off and found the primary jets were wrong. They've reordered those.
Checking the float levels I found, with this forums info, one float level 1.5 inch above the gasket level and the other side was only hafway up to the gasket. Removed and took apart, replaced my one bad float needle and set up the levels. For now I've installed the 2 main jets and the bike starts and accelerates well. I also added 1 washer to each needle and turned air mix screw out to 3 full turns. It did bog down as if fuel starved about 4th gear. I think I have the petcock turned wrong at the tank.
I'll do a good final mix adjustment when I replace the primaries next week. I also installed the hex head screws for ease of removal the next time. Man the bike feels great. My last bike was a Honda CB450.
Thanks to all of you on this board with the good reference material to accomplish getting this bike running.
