I've gone through some of the past posts about this subject and have gotten a real point in the right direction, but the posts are kind of outdated. Want to make sure I'm getting the most up to date information.

I'm looking for some good security options for parking a bike. I don't want to park it in my apartment underground garage without some sort of security. The one thing I can start doing right away is lock it to the concrete pillar. What are some of the products I can use to lock it to the pillar? Where on the bike would I actually want to wrap it?

The other thing I'm looking into is an alarm of some kind. I'm thinking the Scorpio SR-i300 (http://www.scorpioalarms.com/sr-i300.aspx) is a good system. The SR-i500 looks nice too, but are the benefits worth the extra price? Is there another alarm you'd recommend all together? I'd like to keep the price around $200, but I'm open to suggestions.

Finally, do you think it's easy enough for a non-tool guy like me to install an alarm properly?

I use a Gorilla Cycle Alarm and a disc lock. If you were really paranoid, you could get one of those thick New York chains to lock your bike to the pillar with. They're over a hundred bucks though.

Whatever you do, buy a cover. Out of sight, out of mind. If you're really concerned about security, this one's a must and right up there with the most effective locks and alarms.

If you have a bottom-floor apartment you could put it inside, too.

i have a steel cable from home depot....a 15 foot one...it saved it from being stolen once already. I lock it to the coil spring of my car.  But i would get the ones from kryptonite....the cables are braided (making it harder to cut), the one i had was normal twisted cable. I also had a disc lock on and a cover on the bike (which i now lock with a cable as well so no one can easily lift it up).

an alarm is next on the list too...you might want to check out the cheetah alarms on ebay.

Man theft must be really bad in your area to actually ahve to lock your bike up....I park mine at school/work outside all day, dont even lock the bars. At night it sleeps in my garage, but sits outside my house until about 10 or later when i get around to putting her to bed. Its kinda sad what the world is comming to...

I haven't bought one yet, but the Xena combination disk lock/alarm looked like a nice integrated lock/alarm package for $77:

It is a small-enough package to carry with you on the bike.

A ground anchor and short chain, or else a 2-meter through-hardened security chain around the concrete pylon would be good; expect either to cost about $100.  Plus another $50-$100 for a lock.

So far, I'm just relying on insurance.  You can also put some duct-tape around your gas tank if you don't want anyone to steal it... much cheaper.

Good suggestions. I'm thinking I'll go with either the Gorilla Cycle alarm or Scorpio SR-i300 alarm, a bike cover, Xena disk lock. If it's not enough to stop someone from even trying to steal it, maybe it will be enough so that I can at least hear someone is trying to.

Any more suggestions?

I have NY chain, braided steel cable, Kryptonite U-lock and disc lock :lol:
I am going to buy one of the alarms, not decided which one. In my apartment complex a guy had his R-1 stolen recently when he forgot to chain it so it is better be safe than sorry.

What kind of lock do you guys use with NY chain? It came with a disc lock, which did not look hard/safe enough and I use some general padlock from Home Depot.

I have an Abus cable lock (http://lockitt.com/CablesArmored.htm#1000).  I run it through the frame in front of the engine, around the forks, and around a bike rack.  Not sure if that's the best place or not.  I used to run it through the front wheel too, but that's too much trouble for me.  For extra security, when I upgrade bikes, I'll get an Abus chain and lock (http://lockitt.com/chaininfo.htm).  They're really heavy though.  I have a Kryptonite Disc Lock but haven't used it yet.

A cover is a good idea.  I came back to my bike the other day and there was a footprint and scratches on the gas tank!   :guns:

Go live somewhere where you don't have to worry so much.  I did.  I'll take rural living any day.

best and cheapest option, if you have something to lock it to, is to go by a few feet of heavy gauge tow chain from your local hardwear store. that stuff would be tough to get through without power tools. for a lock, buy a round type lock, (http://www.masterlock.com/images/color_img/40.jpg)
these are tougher to cut with bolt cutters due to a lack of space. then get an alarm, gorilla, chatterbox, or scorpion are all good. if anything, the alarm will scare off the idiots who think it's funny to sit on your bike when it's parked. i've seen that before.

Does anyone know what the difference is between the Aritronix Scorpio SR-i300 (http://www.scorpioalarms.com/sr-i300.aspx) and the Aritronix Scorpio OEM500i (http://www.terra-powersports.com/product.aspx/sid/1/catp/54/cat/57/id/28509)? I know that the OEM500i isn't the SR-500i (http://www.scorpioalarms.com/sr-i500.aspx). If anyone can offer some clarification, it would be much appreciated.

Who would have thought actually calling up the manufacturer and asking them would have given me an answer? Turns out there's absolutely no difference between the two models.

Nice. What model is that, though. There are so many of them. Looks like it may be an older one not on the site anymore. It's a 10mm bolt where as the new ones are 14mm. Still worth the money?

I have a scorpio alarm on my bike ( on my ZX11-Installed in 1994! ). The original remote still works and the alarm works perfectly.  Hell I can't even remember the model # of it...

It's saved the bike a few times....

if they've improved them since 1994 and my 11 year old one is still working... Well that's a pretty good testimonial for Scorpio's eh?

My bike is always outside, my apartment parking lot. I was worried about when I got GS... But some of my friends told me that no one would want unpopular bike (ugh!  :x ) and especially girl's lookin bike.

bolts to the concrete floor. cant back the screws out of the concrete and tire covers a few of them so they cant remove all 8. best $180 I ever spent.

Looks like a great solution Pablo and I'd definitely get it if I owned my own garage. I think my manager might have a problem with me bolting that thing down in the apartment garage, though.

It doesnt hurt to ask-worst case he says no. You can grind off the bolt heads when you want to move it. Took me about 20 minutes to take the 8 out when I moved the bike.

It's your space, you're parking your vehicle there and it's not impeding access to anything else around for anyone else. It doesn't even leave holes in the concrete since the bolt remains in place if you grind it off.

Hrm... If my bike is gone when I get home, I'ma be TICKED... It's just sittin in my carport on the centerstand... It's sort of a gated community though... Should be alright til I buy an alarm tonight, though.
