I bought a really cheap waterproof one for boating: no maps at all; it just shows your location (Lat/Lon or UTM).  It's an old model, out of production. I'm sure you could get one dirt cheap on eBay.

I ride to client sites a few times a week.  I use a map in my tankbag mostly: a page from a road atlas, with Lat/Lon lines added to it; and a printout of trip directions from MapsOnUs.com (like mapquest, but can show Lat/Lon of each turn).  If I get lost, I pull over and haul out the GPS, to see where I am.  I have to printout the MapsOnUs.com directions anyways, because I include them with my expense reports.

I do sometimes dream about getting a real GPS, but what I do now takes less time (no there's no need to program it for each trip).

this probably is not the cheapest option but i use my pocketpc with a gps reciever. it has voice navigation...you don't always have to look down. another cool feature is the built-in "yellow pages". you can find any businesses (gas station, hotels, resturants) and any point of interest, anywhere you go. i've useing it  with my car. i plan to use it on my bike in the spring!

Yep. My buddy has this and takes it around in his car. Pretty awesome. Full color maps, shows points of interest, can play MP3s, basically a little computer. It's all bluetooth and has internet. Pretty neato. His is a Compaq 19xx , you can get them < $100 on eBay, the expensive part is the GPS set up, that's another $300ish.

I'd like to know if there's a cheaper option myself... I'm all about saving $$$....

There is a bunch of GPS units on ebay that will work for a pocket pc. Some less than a $100.

there are alot of cheaper gps recievers (less than $100)...but i've got a good name brand one...Pharos for $180 a year ago.

then you would need a pocket pc...any will do. just  make sure it's got expansion slot for the gps AND additional memory expension. so that's two expansion slots. otherwise, you'll be trying to load maps on internal memory and you're not going to have enough room.
