Title: Resurect my bike!
Post by: Honorary on March 03, 2005, 06:45:23 PM
Just got a 1995 GS500 that needs a little love to bring it back to life.  When I bought it , she started right up no worries.  Took her out for the first longer ride and I stopped for gas.  I try to restart it and nothing....won't crank.  Feels like the battery is dead.  I replace the battery and giddy-up.

Next day I try again and it starts up (eventually) but belches white smoke like my grandfather and a pack of Morlboro reds.  Then it dies.  The RPMs drop and it dies.  Try to crank and it feels like the battery is dead again.  One or two cranks and it won't even fire anymore.  Damn.

Thoughts?  :dunno: Am I looking at some major issues here?  Right now I'm only out the price of a new battery but I'm willing to put a little money in if it means some reliability in the long run.

Hmm...charge the battery...it's new after all.  Did the lights go on..??  any clicking/sounds when you hit the starter before it died the second time..?? and that smoke has nothing to do with the battery fyi....but do charge the battery again and check to see it's holding a charge.  One of the experts here will assist you i'm sure so please stay on the line.. :nono:

one more thing...look at them plugs baby....

Brand new battery fully charged.  Lasted all of a day.

Why do I feel like I just inherited someone else's problem?

I'm going to take a look at the stator over the weekend but we'll see what that leads to.

Nooo, you have not inherited someone else's problem. You must give that Baby G all the love and concern that you can...she may have been abused in her past relationships and it is up to you to change her attitude. She will reward you with many a smile. Yeh, listen to the All-Knowing Guru of GS's...Srinath. Does sound like you have a charging problem. Remember to check all the electrical connections too. Love that little GS and this forum.

do you have a volt meter?
buy/beg/borrow one.

key off....read voltage at battery...12.2-12.5V
start bike.... read voltage...13.2-13.8V

if 12 when running...not charging
