:x
Well anyone know how much a new set of locks and ignition cost? I just broke the only key for the bike. :X
I am sooo pissed right now.
go to your local suzuki dealer, they can make a replacement key...
If you still have both pieces you should be able to take it to a locksmith and they can make a copy...

If not you can just replace the whole ignition lock for $29 including 2 new keys. Just did it yesterday on my bike. Dennis Kirk has the exact aftermarket replacement.

Well that will help get the bike started, only problem is i need to get the seat off to put the battery in and open the gas tank. I'm going to try and get a new key today. If that doesn't work I'll get all new locks for everything.
Well, I got a new key made. 2 diff locksmiths didn't have the blank needed. He made one from something close, that key opened the seat lock, but still won't work on the ignition or gas tank. My GF is going to take the broken key to a locksmith by her place and see if he has the blank. Bike shops were closed yesterday so I couldn't get a zuk blank key.
And if the supid reverse star bits are worn is my only option to drill out the little bolts from the bottom, or can I take off the top triple cover some how and get the ingnition out that way?
Drilling the bolts is actually not as hard as it sounds. It's possible you may be able to unscrew the bolts but after hearing what everyone else has said it probably is just a waste of time. It's actually easier to drill from the front.
You need to remove the headlight shell to get to it. Look inside at the head of the bolt and aim straight for it with a very small bit. After you drill that through get a little bigger bit and go at it again. In a jiffy the head of the bolts will be removed. Then just pull the lock out and pull out the rest of the bolts with your fingers. Nothing to it really. Just remember it's easier to drill straight through the lock body from the front aiming straight for the bolt heads. And be careful that you don't drill all the way through and hit the frame. Maybe you'll get your key made so you won't even have to worry about it. Good luck.

OK, thanks, before I do this though does anyone have a pic of the bolts i'm supposed to drill out? Are the the ones on the bottom of the ignition or more towards the top?
The 2 bolts are threaded through the bottom towards the top. I actually made a few photos with a cheap webcam but you can't really see anything with them.
Derek
well i guess what I'm asking, is there looks to be 2 sets of bolts for this. The ones on the bottom look like they just remove the cover at the bottom. a wire set comes out of here into the headlight. Then there are some slightly bigger bolts higher up that lool like they connect it the the triple tree. Do i just remove those, cause they look like a Buddha Loves You to get to.
The two bolts are really hard to see. They are on the bottom near where the wires come out. Get these two out and the whole lock will fall out. This is what your ignition switch looks like. That's what you'll be removing.
Copy these two lines and paste them as one in your browser to see a photo...

You'll need to take off the headlight shell to get to it. The ignition switch wires plug inside the headlight shell also. Kind of hard getting the plug to pull apart. You might have to work it a little with a screwdriver to get it to pull apart. Check back if you need any more help.

ok, well i took the ignition off and the locksmith basically said the lock is toast. Which is why the key didn't work.
Looks like i got screwed on ebay once again. $30 for a new ignition isn't bad, but not having a key means i can't get the gas tank open. So i'll have to get the filler lid off.
I've gotten the 4 removable allen bolts off but something is still holding the silver ring on at the back. :x And a new gas cap is gonna cost $100 or so from the dealer. I've tried looking online and noone carries a replacement for these bikes that I can find.
The sad part is I can't afford to spend the $100 to fix it. :( I have like 30 cents to my name until next payday.
The weather is turning nice now and I can't ride. At least I can take the tops off my car.
I may be wrong but I think someone on here said other bikes locking gas caps will work on the GS500. You might check ebay to see if you can find something for a bike like a Katana. But be sure to find out from these other guys if it'll work. Or look for a very low priced dented gas tank with key for sale on ebay. That's going to be alot cheaper than $100.
Another thing, put a "wanted to buy" post in the "for sale" section of the forum. A couple of the guys have already basically gave me some of the stuff I needed compared with what a dealer wants.
Derek
the wanted ad has already been made.
umm, ive unbolted the gas cap and rekeyed myself, the seat latch cable can be gotten to with a pair of needle nose pliers, you just need to pull it a little bit to release, then you can unbolt the lock and rekey it.
now, ive not done this before, but heard it did work. a buddy supposedly put a tiny drop of Superglue gel on the end of broken key half he had, using a toothpick, held the flap open on the lock, inserted the key all the way and left it to cure for 1/2 hour. he was able to then pull the key completely out intact. he took the key and silver soldered it back together and had a Duplicate made.

Care to explain how? I can't get the current cap off because the cap is locked and I can't get to the bolts that hold it down.
SUCCESS!!!!
I took the ignition to a different locksmith and he had a new key cut for it in 2 minutes. I can now unlock my gas tank too.
<---Doing a happy dance.
