Title: Somebody refresh my memory...
Post by: Michael on March 08, 2005, 01:59:57 PM
I've already tried the refresh button but it didn't work.
When I shut off the throttle from higher revs coming into a corner, the bike crackles and pops like breakfast cereal.  Is that because I have a leak in the exhaust, because the bottom end jetting is too lean, or some other (perhaps sinister) reason?
All help gratefully received.

Lean mix maybe, Maybe synch issues ... does it vibrate more at idle and right off idle than over 4K ... Then synch ... of course maybe exhaust or intake leak ... if its intake its so slight you done have the other characterstics ... and finally might just be slightly unequal exhaust pipe lengths and good old fashioned ... "oh crap it happens "
Cool.

All bikes will exibit this behavior. Small pops are normal but loud bangs are bad. If you are running a high flow exhaust (basically anything other than stock), the popping will happen.

I kind of like it when my TL pops. Just do not ride too close when it really does back fire (excess fuel burning in the exhaust) because you will feel it.

Thanks, guys.  Yes, non-stock exhaust.  No, runs pretty smooth throughout.  My real concern is that while it has done this since I put the less restrictive pipe on, it seems to be doing it more.  maybe I'm just riding harder.

Am I gonna have to ask the "When was the last time you checked your valve clearances?" question?  ;)

Good point.  Never done it myself.  Always let the guys at the shop do it when they do the regular service (Yes, I know.  Nobody has to say it  :nono: ).  Last one was at 36,000 km, about 3,000 km and 3 months ago.  No changes to the engine noise recently, no change to the fuel consumption.  I guess it's just one of those things.
