Title: Oil Pressure Gauge lights up...
Post by: atek3 on March 12, 2005, 01:20:14 AM
So when I ride to work I ride about 22 miles on the freeway...then i get off, roar around this wide turn, hurry down a hill, and stomp on the brakes for the red light... and the oil pressure light comes on for a sec... if i twist the throttle it goes away, and it never comes on when i'm moving.  Happened to me a couple times all in the same situation, going fast, followed by hard braking, followed by waiting at a red light.

any ideas?

I changed the oil 2k ~1500 miles ago.

ok, I know this is a stupid question.. but since that 1500 miles ago, have you checked your oil level?

Sounds just like a an old Toyota car I had. Not sure what it could be but check your oil level for sure.

Well when you hit your brakes all the oil will be "sloshed" forward.  This is why many cars have baffles in them to slow down the oil slosh.  Just top off your oil and you'll be fine.

Top oil first, but then does the oil light stay on if you don't give it any throttle?  Are there any other times this happens when you are stopped?

If you answered yes there could be crap stuck in the oil strainer, which happened to me.   I had epoxy from the rotor magnet lodged in the strainer area that only seemed to start floating up and blocking the strainer when the oil was hot and the bike was back at idle rpms.  After cleaning that out (and fixing the other problems), my oil pressure problems have definitely gone away.  I'm not saying you have epoxy in there, but something like that could be blocking oil flow.

so where did the oil I put in go?  I thought it was a closed loop?

I put in more oil, I'll see if that fixes the problem.

thanks,

It's not unusual to burn a little oil over time.  It may be so little at a time you don't even see it in the exhaust.  Some GS500's burn more than others.

As per the T-CLOCK process, check it every so often and top off when necessary.  Don't worry -- stay up on it and enjoy the ride. :)

You have to drop the oil pan to get to the strainer, its the round deal with three phillips screws holding it on.  I took mine off today to clean old form-a-gasket out of it.
