Title: stock exhaust has no holes, right?
Post by: William M on March 13, 2005, 06:52:36 PM
An obvious question, but ....My bike came with 4 smallish holes surrounding the main outlet of the exhaust. I assume these were drilled?

Ya it should only have one hole in the middle.  No little holes around it.

I noticed my '97 has some small holes drilled around that area too. They almost look too symetrical to have been done by an amateur.

Yea those dont do anything ... Ok a wee bit of noise maybe ... Toss it and slip on or full system for any effect ...

a wee bit of noise? :bs:  I've got 8 drilled in my exhaust. Its pretty freakin loud and it has to make it much more free flowing then w/o them.

Title: Center
Post by: The Buddha on March 13, 2005, 11:35:26 PM
OK the bigger factor is how deep the holes are ... and if the center also has been drilled ... The holes are just what you see on the outside. If you drilled through with like a 6-8 inch long drill then you'd have drilled into the center baffle ... and pretty much estrablished a straight across path ... and You'd definetly need a rejet ...
Cool.

I like the sound its WAY better then stock. Any preformance gains from it? Maybe, I dont really know. At idle it isnt too loud around 5k theres a nice burble and at 9-10k there is the most sexy WHUURRRAAAAA! :) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/ash93316/exhaustphoto.jpg) I'm not quite sure how to post a audio clip.

I just refilled the holes in mine that the previous owner must have drilled. They were small enough (and were only on the "outsite" wall", not drilled through the second baffle inside) that I just  machine screwed the holes to fill and had those spot welded.

The drilled exhaust by comparison sounds like hell IMHO.  Makes it sound cheap, like a worn out exhaust with, well, a hole in it.

Just my $.02 worth.

If you want to hear a really nice sounding exhaust check out the Vance and Hines video on the "mods" section of this website.

I completely removed all the metal around my center exhaust pipe.  I drilled the holes, then thought it was a little puny sounding.  I reamed the holes out more, and thought it sounded better, finally I got my die grinder and ground all the material out all the way around, and voila...mean twin sound.  Daddy likey.
