Title: 89 clip-on conversion
Post by: jiggersplat on March 14, 2005, 07:10:28 AM
so i grabbed the top triple and the clip-on tubes from an 89 off of ebay.  looks like the top triple should mount no problem.  however, it looks like i got two left-side tubes.  i say this because the tubes are the same, but neither of them have the twist grip.  will i be able to take the twist grip off the right side of my stock bars and put it on the clip-on tubes?  what about the levers?  can anyone confirm or deny that the controls from an 90+ will transfer over to a set of 89 clip-ons?

The handle tubes are the same ... US version and euro version are slightly different ... but on both ... left = right. The difference is in the posts. Now I think You can modify the handle tube to fit with 2 right posts or 2 left posts ... but one of the posts has a R or L (I forget) cast into it ... the other does not. As long as you have that ... it should all fit.
Cool.

the tubes should be pressed into the mount blocks to make left and right sides and hence replaceable should they get bent

You can use any 7/8 handle bar tubes in the 89 top mount.
I bought replacement tubes from Lockhart Phillips. I have carbon fiber tubes.
You just need to use a round file to notch a groove for 1 of the pinch bolts.
Slide the tube in the mount and you can see where you need to put the groove. LP has anodized aluminum bars too. 8)
