Title: idle screw and air mixture screw??
Post by: gp on March 14, 2005, 03:33:48 PM
Hi Everyone,

I just got my '89 model gs about a month ago and have been having
what seems like endless problems with it - hoping someone can advise what my bike's problem is.

My latest situation is...
got the bike serviced, bike kept dying while on the road, found out it was one of the spark plugs, changed it, still died on the road, took it back to service guy, he said fuel was too rich so he adjusted 2 notches to make it run leaner. Got it back, runs beautifully for the last 2 days.
Now, on my way to work this morning, while stopped at the traffic lights the idle goes down to zero, so I adjusted the idle screw (turning inwards towards left), it did not make a difference. I ended up revving the bike until I got to work. My ride to work is not that far, however normally the bike would have warmed up by half distance to work. Normally, my idle is at abut 1400, this morning it was 900 and struggling.
Is there another screw that I should be adjusting apart from the idle screw? There is a post about an air mixture screw - where is that screw??
should I be touching it, turn clockwise or anti-clockwise?? do you think its some other problems?  :dunno:

thanks,
gp

pull out that same plug, and look to see if it is fuel fouled. you might have a float level too high or something.
checking your float level is easy, just use a clear rubber or vinyl tube, hook it to the fuel dump nipple on the bottom of your carb float bowl. open the screw right there, and turn your frame mounted petcock to 'prime'
Now hold the tube up next to the carb, the level of fuel in the tube should be even with the bowl gasket.

Kerry has some nice pics of this somewhere, maybe using the search function will find them.

Here's a link to the Float Height Check (http://www.bbburma.net/FloatHeight.htm) page.

As it happens, the first photo on that page is the one I marked up to show the location of the mixture screws:

To get to them you will have to "drill out" the brass caps ... carefully.
