Title: which mag tank bag?
Post by: atek3 on March 15, 2005, 11:45:17 AM
I read through the archives and heard good things about marsee and icon and cortech.  I'd like a high quality bag that won't slide off my tank when I put 40 pounds of lead in it.  I'd also like to be able to take it off the bike and use it as a backpack everyday.   A map pouch would be nice.  Good cargo capacity, but not crazy towering skyscraper capacity.
it will go on my gs500.

thanks,

I have the icon urban....it's perfect for my daily travel to school and work....it can easily hold my laptop, 3-ring binder, notebooks, and school books....it's got some nice side pockets for wallet, phone, keys, etc....and has a nice and big map packet on top.....

....I've had other bags (not the ones you listed) that were backpack capable.....but they really weren't designed to be worn comfortably....the Icon Urban is.....it actually fits and feels like a backpack....not like a tankbag with straps.....

I'm currently using the Icon Primer. It's a small bag with just enough room for my camera, iPod, extra visor, and some other little things. I'm probably gonna pick up the Icon Urban pack sometime in the next week or so.

I like my Icon Urban, because it's a backpack when it's not on your bike.

I think I'll get the Icon for general purpose backpack / tank bag and a marcee when I need more space/waterproof.

I tried the icon, the magnets are too small for the kinda loads I'd like to fill the bag with, oh well, back to the drawing board.

You're better off getting a tank bag with straps if you plan on putting 40 lbs in it.  Expect your front end to dive even more with that extra weight on top of the tank too.  Ever thought about getting a tail bag?

I have a Held magnet tank bag, and a Held strap tank bag (which I strap to the pillion seat).  I have put 16 lbs in one or the other on some rides, without problems.  But I never tried 40 lbs.

Things I'd look for, if I were shopping again, would be bags that can hold a 8.5x11" 3-ring binder flat,  or a laptop with a 15" screen.    Even if it's magnet-mount, you can throw some stuff in to keep the laptop from laying flat against the magnets.
