Title: Battery suggestions
Post by: groff22 on March 21, 2005, 10:12:33 AM
My battery must be toast after sitting all winter... Bike just "clicks" when I try to start her up. The lights will die for a few seconds, then will come back on but clicking remains.

I was able to jumpstart from a 12v charger.

My Suzuki dealer wants close to a 100 bucks for a new battery  but I know there are some out there for less then half of that.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I found one at Canadian Tire but it has wires to connect to, not posts.

Thank you :D

I bought one at good ol" Wally world.  i paid $36 for it with exchange.  How long does a battery usually last.  I live in Southern Missori if climate has anything to do with it.  also what steps shpuld be taken for winter storage on a battery.

I think Im going to get an Interstate for mine.  $100 is a hell of a lot for a battery, go to your local shop and you should be able to get one for around 50, but I guess your in Canada so maybe thats cheap up there. :dunno:

Kerry turned me onto what seems to be a direct knock-off of the stock Yuasa battery (http://www.yuasabatteries.com/battery.asp?bID=B39&vID=4099). Check out this battery from Chaparral (http://www.chaparral-racing.com/Chaparral/productr.asp?pf%5Fid=378%2D1065&gift=False&HSLB=False&mscssid=BE4F4B46C3BB45C782E4822E58B47589). I've been using this for a couple of months now with absolutely no problems what so ever. Best part is it's only $22.99. Thank you Kerry! :thumb:

I have also found that use of a "battery Tender" keeps my battery at top performance at all times. My VFR was connect to one while it was not ridden while I was deployed in the Middle East for a year, and it fired right up when I got back. I did not put one on my truck, and I wish I had cuz the bat was stone dead.

I bought an Energizer brand battery at Pep Boys.  I didn't think they carried any bike stuff at all, but it turns out they did have batteries in the back.  It's been fine.  Cost ~$30-35.  Exactly like the stock battery, just with the vent on the opposite side.

I also got a battery tender "junior" to keep it fresh.  Once it got charged up the first time, I put it on for about an hour once a week and it's good to go.

I got a battery from my local MC repair shop for $29.00.  I also picked up a Battery Tender Jr. for the same price.  No more start up worries.  Just make sure you get the vent on the correct side and install the vent tube!

Cool thanks for the recommendations -- I'll check Wallmart (Wally world?! later this week). Do you think I can still salvage my old one? i mean It still holds enough to charge keep my lights going -- I just want to get around having a dead bike when I come out from a shop  :D

Ride safe.

I'd go out and get a battery tender before getting a new battery.  You're going to want one anyway.  Unless your battery is fried, you should be able to hook it up for a day or so and be back in business.  Check the water level in the battery, make sure it's good, then hook it up to the tender.  Let it sit for a day or two then see how it goes.
