Tried getting my gs500e started. 1993. The tank was off so I put it back on. The bike has not been run for about 2 years. I lost the key so I taped into the ignition wires in the headlight. I got everything to come on (lights etc...) The problem is I cant get it to stay running. I spray the carb with starting fluid. It starts but dies quick. I cant keep it going. What are some stuff I should look at? Do you think it might be the way I taped into the ignition? There where 4 wires. I think one was orange the other was like brown. The other two were grey or something. I got all the lights and stuff to come on so I dont think thats the problem.
Pull your carbs off and send them to Srinath for a good solid cleaning
i think if you managed to pull your ignition apart and got it to start by finding the right wires you should be able to handle the simple carbs on the gs. but yes, give them a good cleaning and it should be good as new :thumb:
I'm thinking start simple... did you turn on the tank mounted fuel petcock? All the hoses still connected correctly? If it hasn't been started in 2 years that gas in the tank is toast, and the carbs definitely need some cleaning...

Yes. I got new gas. The hoses are all great but there is a hose I cant figure out. Its not in the picture that I have in my book. If you are sitting on the bike, its the hose coming out of the carb on the right side. At the top of the carb. I dont have it connected anywhere.
what is that hose on the side of the carb? Its on the right side at the top. Its not connected to anything and I cant find out where it goes. My tank has 3 connections. I only used the two...i never used the one that is welded to the tank. What is that one for?

Check there, hopefully that will help.

You might be talking about the vacuum hose from the carb to the fuel petcock. It is slightly smaller diameter than the fuel hoses. If that is not connected you will only get fuel in PRI position. See Kerry's fuel hose diagram link just posted.
Yep... sounds like the vacuum hose. It connects to the left side carb, towards the bottom on the front/inside. That'd pretty much explain your problem perfectly too... dying after a short period. Turn the petcock to PRI and I bet it'd run... Better yet, hook up that vacuum line and it'll run right.
The little nipples on top of the carbs are used for vacuum synching the carbs... make sure they're covered or it'll run pretty poorly.
