I HAVE READ A TON OF TOPICS ABOUT WAXING AND OILING BUT NO ONE EXPLAINS HOW TO DO IT. ITS NOT IN THE FAQ AND NOT ON THE MAIN PAGE. I HAVE NEVER OWNED A MOTORCYCLE AND I WOULD LIKE TO KEEP UP ON THE BASIC MAINTENANCE MYSELF.
HOW DO YOU WAX/OIL A CHAIN? STEP BY STEP.

I use an aerosol can, put the bike on the centerstand, spray on chain while turning the back wheel.
THANK YOU. THAT WAS AN EASY EXPLANATION. I WASNT SURE IF YOU HAD TO TAKE THE CHAIN OFF OR DO ANYTHING THAT MIGHT BE A PAIN.

Clean the chain first. Use some kerosene or WD40 to get all the grime off. Put the bike on its center stand, and turn the rear wheel. This turnes the chain. Spray a couple rotations, go at it with a grunge brush and get all that nasty stuff off. Use a rang to clean all the liquid off, then you can lube it =]
Do you have chain lube? If not, you can use WD40 or Liquid Wrench, which are both available at local automotive supply stores. These can also be used to clean the chain.
Put the motorcycle in neutral and place the motorcycle on the centerstand after a nice long ride (like coming home from work, or 5 minutes is sufficient). This way the chain is warm, expanded, and willing to accept lubricants.
Spray a clean rag (or sock) with the lubricant and wrap it around the lower run of chain, holding loosely with your left hand (I usually place my four fingers on the other side of the chain and my thumb on this side).
With your right hand, rotate the rear wheel clockwise (I push the top of the tire backwards). You may have to increase your grip to keep the rag, and your hand, from being drawn to the front of the bike (and into the front sprocket!).
I make one pass of the chain with my hand in the above position (real easy if you have a masterlink; start at the masterlink, end at the masterlink).
Then rotate the rag to a clean spot and spray again with lube. Now, hold the rag such that you are cleaning the top and bottom of the chain (thumb on top, fingers underneath), and rotate the rear wheel.
DO NOT have the bike running and in gear to clean the chain. Do a search here and you will find out what happened to someone.

I dont know if I would use wd40 because it is a solvent, that is why it will clean your chain. Use chain lube, if wd40 is sufficient then you wouldnt need to use chain lube after you used wd40 to clean it. Just go down to a motorcycle shop and buy some lube, any will work. And when you are going to lube it spray it on the inside of the chain (the side that meets the sprocket) that way it will get worked in and pushed into the chain better.
