I recently filled out the card that comes with the tax booklet when you do your own taxes as well as declared myself a donor on my drivers license. I am happy to be a possible life-saver to someone who may need a new heart, kidney, etc.
My only stipulation was that no one gets my eyes.
Are you all donors? If not, would you mind telling your reasons? I just wonder why many people do not wish to donate parts of themselves that they won't need when they're gone. :dunno:
I am
they don't call it a donorcycle for nothing.
I'm a donor... despite the rumors I've heard saying that rich, old, fat, alcholic men always elbow their way to the front of the line.
Suzuki10, it intrigues me that you offered every part of your body except for your eyes. I excluded my pee pee from my offerings for the sake of the absurd. But it sounds like yours is for different reasons. Would you mind expounding?
OH My Gosh, I never thought about that!! When people want a sex change operation, they must use "donated parts" Wow that is so disgusting to think about. I think you made a good move by opting to keep it. If you really loved your pee pee you would let it go on living after you're gone though. I mean why should it have to go just because you did? ok sorry ...
To answer your question: I chose to keep my eyes because when I die I hope to go to heaven and I am afraid if I donate my eyes I won't be able to see it. It's something you wait your whole life to see...the lights, the gates, God... I don't know just a personal thought I guess.

Very interesting perspective Amanda. :)
I'm a donor. They really push it when you get your motorcycle license, heh.
As long as I can have a funeral great. I honestly dont wanna be buried in the ground (as ive previously discussed with my mom when I started riding, GRR) but if I can give something of mine to save a life I will GLADLY do it. If I could do it NOW and still live a healthy and happy life myself I will do it. I dont drink, dont smoke, never tried ANY drugs at all, im boring and healthy, which is good for the people that eat...err...get my parts implanted.
I always have been, and my wife never will be. She is a cancer survivor who has had many surgeries in the past and feels that her body has had anough taken from it.
I respect her decision and she respects mine.

That's interesting. Is she able to be a donor? I'm also a cancer survivor, but I'm unable to be a donor. I can't give blood or anything like that. I guess the idea is a higher risk of a failing/cancerous donation even though I've been in remission and off treatment for years... I would be a donor if it were allowable...
trey
yea im a donor. i dont want to be buried either. that also goes along with my claustrophobia(sp). but i dont remember seeing any option for keeping certain body parts...
I am, although I don't know what they will be able to use when i am just a splat on the road. being a donor and having O- blood it's like having a big bullseye on my back everyone tries to get me.
I'm not sure if a successful pee pee transplant has been performed but it got me to wondering how many times can an organ be transplanted from host to host? For instance: if Dirk Diggler died and I recieved his member and I enjoyed it for a long time could it then be transplanted to a new host? Theoretically it could live on forever and ever since the cells are continually renewed, but I just thought I'd throw that out there.
Just hypothesizing...but Dirk Diggler doesn't have anything on me anyway. ;)
oo O blood, gimmie gimmie my stock is runnin low man.
Yup, I'm on the national database plus carry the card, they are welcome to anything usable. The wife said not my eyes but I over-ruled that, can't see how they will be any use to me (no pun intended) I also give blood regularly, enlightened self-interest realy, I rekon as a biker I'm quite likely to need some sometime.
If there's anything left I'd like the burning longship treatment but I suppose it'll be a box at the local crematorium.
Some of the southern European countries have the legel assumption that everyone is a donor unless they opt-out whereas we, in UK, have to opt-in. I think the former is better, any thoughts on that ? ?
I would support that. I think that anyone who wouldn't support it has some narcissistic issues. Not to harsh on you Suzuki10 but you really can't believe that you're eyes will be very effective in heaven after they are eaten away by worms, do you?
Treybrand~
She can donate her eyes and a few other organs as her cancer was Ovarian. Like you, she cannot donate blood.

I feel that once I'm dead, my body is just a carbon-based container. If someone else's life can be improved by that container being cut up and reused, I'm all for it. I'm certainly not using it anymore. If I'm cremated, no one will be able to tell the difference.
If you are a donor, make sure that your loved ones know. I've been told that what your licence says it isn't as important if your relatives object to it. If you're not, then I hope you have a reason. This this is too important of a decision to be ignored whether you are a motorcycle rider or not.
another thing i was thinking about. im already a donor as i previously stated. i know that they give my heart to someone who needs one, my liver to someone etc. but what about the stuff that cant be transplanted. like your eyes. they cant give it to someone who lost an eye... i have no problem with donating organs to save lives, but are they gonna use my body for things that i dont believe in, like stem cell research?
not if you die in a firey motorcycle crash,
I use to give blood, but got tired of being stuck by inept vampires.
Pretty damn sad when 2 phlebotomist cant hit a huge vein but i can.
I'm a donor, for the same reasons most of you are. I am not going to need the parts so I hope they can help someone else out. Though I did become a donor before I started riding. I also give blood every time I can when the come around to the office.
Weaslenose, don't know about the states but here they could not use any odds'n'ends for research, Organ donor means just that, donating a body part from your cadaver to a person that needs it. Usually heart, liver, kidney, cornea for grafting and skin etc. Some people leave their bodies for research, medical schools etc but I understand it is now getting difficult to find takers for such bequests. All cheery stuff huh ?
good. thats comforting. im going to check up on that for where i live.
my motto is take what you want, and burn the rest... I don't want to rot in a box feeding worms
Been a blood donor for more than half my life. Up to 85 pints. Not an organ donor yet.
Have the phone number of the Australian Organ Donor Register on my helmet (along with a sticker that says "Endangered Species") and have signed up myself and my sons- after explaining to them what it meant. Kids organs are always in very short supply, and if the worst comes to it, I'd like to think their death would mean something to someone else.
Have ben a donor for @ 10 years. just hope I,m dead before they take any parts! :o
I'm 100% with commuterguy on this, I'd like whatever's left to get the blazing longship treatment but I will probably get what a dear freind and colleague had, the local crematorium and ashes scattered from a ship.
I am a donor and I was well before I became a motorcycle rider...
Weaslenose, On the donor paper that came with my taxes, it says that the parts I am donating can either go for medical/transplant purposes AND for educational and research reasons which leads me to believe that maybe they can do things you may not believe in. We both live close to each other so I doubt it's different for you. But check it out and let me know.
I've been a donor since i got my license. My wife...i try to talk her into it with no avail. She wants to leave the world the way she came in. I'd wanna be burned as well.
This is cool, weird, and scary all at the same time... a new way to spend eternity... pressed into a gem!
http://www.lifegem.com/
"The LifeGem is a certified, high quality diamond created from the carbon of your loved one as a memorial to their unique and wonderful life."
oh, and yes, I'm a donor. I figure I won't be needing any of that stuff where I'm going. They can take what they want and zorch the rest of me into dust.
Ha I like the link on that website..."Lifegem for pets" I know people love their pets, I love my dog, but I just can't see wearing her on my finger. It's very creative though...I wonder how much it would be to have a deceased loved one made into a gem. Someone should call.
there is a price list on the website.
looks like its about 2,500 US dollars for a 1/4 ct diamond.
about 14,000 for a full carat.
i looked at that...cool but wierd at the same time. I think it said they'll put your name in it if you want. thats just some freaky stuff.
I am not...
I always think I am immortal when I ride a bike. Otherwise, I cannot deal with CA drivers on the freeway. ;)
(That's why I survived once from the accident and will survive in the future!!)
~*Lil Brat*~
yes big donor
I've been a donor since I first got my license... I figure, what the hell do I need my parts for? If I'm dead, who give a crap...
If they can find something worthwhile, they can have it! :thumb:
In most states your next of kin will be consulted about your final wishes. In most cases that donor thing on your license is just a heads up if they find you dead or dying.
Make sure your wishes are made clear to your loved ones. Adult bodies will not be used for stem cell research if you are concerned by that sort of thing. Adult stem cells are available from lots of adults, after all.
In most states, donating your organs is different than donating your body to "science". The latter are used by students, the former might be harvested for transplant. Whole eyes are rarely taken, usually the lenses are the most sought after. So when you get to heaven you will be able to see but everything will be blurry

. i am myself, (a donor)err. signed on for it.
when i go i want a "viking funeral" i think same as your blazing longship :thumb:
on my old licence (expired) i had teh donor sticker.. i got to put one on the new one too.. i will do so in the morning.
Organ Donor here. I also used to give blood whenever I can, but a few years back they rejected me cause I lived overseas (reasoning was possible issues w/ Mad Cow Disease). Now I can't give blood anymore :x
Ditto here. :x
