Title: Keanu Reeves as Constantine- warning: may spoil movie a bit
Post by: conflicttheorist on March 24, 2005, 01:18:55 PM
Okay, I just saw Constantine and I have to admit that I generally enjoy Reeves' movies and I enjoyed this one.  Yes-It the plot was all over the place and the characters were all under developed.  However, I blame the falling short of this movie one the fact that they had about a million cool things in the movie and they failed to capitalize on any of them:  Constantines relationship with god, his exorcism power, Demons attacking in the streets, cool images of Hell, underground clubs for the fallen, Holy weapons, the son of the devil, the spear itself and its power, the influence of angels and demons on people... All these things were but a glimpse and the movie could have picked any two of them to focus on and it would have been better.
But let me take the wind out of your sails by saying that if you went to the movie and didn't like it you better have more reason than just cursing keanu reeves for ruining the movie.  Look, by now you should know what Reeves does and how well/poorly he does it.  Either you like it  or you don't.  I don't like the lead singer of Aerosmith, but you don't see me buying their next album and go crying about how they let me down yet again.  I don't then go buy the second part of that album and shake my fist towards the sky cursing aerosmith for not meeting my standards.  Why is it, then, that so many people who claim to hate keanu and think he is the worst actor in the world keep seeing his movies, only to act surprisingly disappointed that keanu reeves' acting is what it has always been?

I personally like his acting ALOT. Hes been really good in everything ive seen (lets just pretend bill and ted never happened). I still havent seen this movie but I REALLY REALLY want to, but I dont know the background? Is there a background you can give taht wouldnt mess upt he plot and story for me?

Good point. I don't like Reeves' acting either, but I didn't let that stop me from enjoying the movie. I thought they did a good job portraying Lucifer. I was woried that it would end up cheesy or outrageous, but that guy did a sweet job of playing the part. I was hoping Constantine would use that dragon's breath on someone, but he never did.

Constantine is sort of like an exorcist detective who does does the job of kicking ass on demons when they jaywalk into our dimension from hell without a hall pass.  It has elements of the exorcist III, if that helps (I really liked that movie).  But, like I said, the exorcist was more cohesive because it focuses on two elements-exorcism and the exorcists relationship with god- while this movie has a lot more things which are cool but glossed over.  I'm sure you'd like it- but the movie has this weird effect of raising expectations and then leaving you unsatisfied.

i've recently read all the books up to 175 or so.  very good stuff.  haven't seen the film yet and not sure if i will.

i'd have to disagree with Daniely, i think Bill and Ted was the role he was born to play.  seems to be the role he was most believable in.  still, he's not bad if used properly.

cheers,
will

So where's Constaintine at the send this one back???

Since it's here again, am I the only one who really liked the movie for the song Passive by APC on the soundtrack? If you've never heard it you should  youtube it. Unless you don't like Tool or APC.
