So today I changed out the chain and front sprocket. Got a Sunstar front sprocket and a Parts Unlimited chain. The OEM sprocket was actually sloppy at the splines but the new sprocket fit good. The only thing is that the oem had about a 3/16" lip on the back of it so it had less side to side play. The Sunstar was just flat and once it was on could slide considerably either way on the output shaft. Is this the correct way or am I going to have to put some kind of spacer behind it?
Just wanted to check into this as it could possibly be 2 strikes against me on the drivetrain, the chain uses a masterlink and the sprocket may not fit correctly. Hate to get stranded out in the middle of nowhere or worse. Thanks.

hey i just changed to a 15 tooth sunstar,and it fits great i havent riden it yet.
I just checked Kerry's sprocket and chain webpage. According to it I have the Sunstar sprocket for an '89 - '93 GS500. My bike is a 1997. Either I screwed up or Dennis Kirk did. Thanks.

I have been running a 15T Sprocket Specialists front sprocket without the hub on it for the last 40k miles on my 97 GS. It too originally came with a sprocket with a hub like yours. The front sprocket will align itself with the rear. The JT sprockets come with the hub.
Put a DID chain on it with the clip type master link at about 20k miles and approx every 20k miles since. Bike has 80k miles on it now. I've put about a quarter million miles on chains with clip type master links on 400-750cc bikes. No problems yet.
Just checked the Dennis Kirk site again. According to it the sprocket is supposed to fit my bike. Now I'm really confused.

Sprocket Specialists supplies the flat sprocket w/o the hub for all years GS500s. I called them when I got the 1st one and they assured me it would be OK and it has been. Actually I'm on about the third replacement front sprocket on that bike now, all the same kind. Appearantly Sunstar does the same.

Whoops, sorry coll0412, a little typo there I just corrected. I did the common reduction from 16T to 15T which picks up the revs on the highway. Did lots of highway travel that way and the revs never bothered me. The 15T sure helped to get the 97 GS moving easier when stopped on uphills though with my 240# aboard. :lol:
Just space your sprocket with some washers and it should be fine.
I thought about using a couple of washers in there. Next time I have it apart it wouldn't hurt to try some. Thanks.
